don't forget to try other shot size and different brands to see which one gives you the best pattern.some thing they all pattern the same, but they don't. my gun gets awful patterns with Rem. and Fed. shells.with the Winchester #6 turkey load it will destroy the target.
try different ones.

best of luck on getting a load worked out. and on getting a big old bird the season.

Congrats on the new gun, but why does it seem that everyone wants a 3 1/2" gun for turkeys these days???????? Gezzeeee, I guess I just don't get it.
For the money you can save on buying justa 3" gun, you can then buy a custom choke tube for it and get a better pattern than with the 3 1/2" gun without all tha wicked recoil!!! The only way I'd even think of getting a 3 1/2" gun, would be in a Semi-Automatic shotgun.

I also use an 870 SM Mossy Oak pattern. My older boy has a black and wood and also has great success. The thing I like the most about the 2 3/4, 3 and 3 1/2 chamber is you can hunt a variety of game pheasant, turkey, ducks, goose, etc. When you look at these 3 sizes, coupled with t he types of ammo, shot size, type and case the options are big.

The 870 is a great shooting gun - I like it better than a Browning and Bertetta that I also have. Very low maintenance and always accurate. I also agree that you should get a few patterning targets and see what rounds give you are different yardage.

a buddy of mine hunts with a super mag. he loves it. he's offered to let me hunt with it but my 3in mag 870 will work for right now. my next shotgun will probably be a 3 1/2 in mag or a light semi 20.

I've got one and they are good guns and good value. Lots of power and reliable. I've got the dull blued steel / wood model with Remington full choke.

I tried mine out with Winchester #5 shot and full size turkey head target and got four shot in the neck at 48 paces (40 yards).

Good luck.

Congrats on the new gun. I have had the Rem. SPS-T supermag for two years now (Mossey oak camo, 22" Barrel). It is a great gun. I love how the finish and the synthetic stock make it nearly indestructable. Not to mention that the recoil pads on this gun are very thick and comfortable. I have only ever shot 3" out of it while hunting.

Good luck!
