Man are there the calls out there, wondering if you guys could help me narrow it down. I dont have the funds to buy all kinds of calls so I was wondering what 2 I should get. I was thinking of getting a slate call and a set of mouth calls, so I can call with my bow in my hand. Will I be able to do all the calls with these? What brand is a good one to look at, MADE IN USA?
For a beginner, I'd recommend Knight and Hale's Ol Yeller. Its an easy to use slate type call that sounds pretty good. Another good call is the Primos Power Crystal. It takes more work to condition the surface though, but its pretty sweet sounding with plenty of volume when you need it. I'd try different mouth calls until you find one that works for you. I like Quaker Boy's Old Boss Hen.
I use nothing but HS Strutt and they work great. I use anHS Strut lil' duece slate call and then a triple reed HS Strut mouth call. And yes, you can produce all the calls you want with these. Especially the slate call..i think its the easiest.

I am very new to the Turkey scene and so far my brotherinlaws have me sold on Primos brand calls. personally I think the ease of use and end result is better over all. The youngest of the brotherinlaws got me a Primos Freak w/frictionite not a bad call to start with...

Not that it's personal but the MOJO by River Valley is as easy to use as the Ol'Yeller by K&H..and is more versital...acid washed glass over slate with two strikers....Anway,
Only two calls, if your proficient with a mouth call, by all means yes and add a pot call.....

I just, after ten years of calling, have found my perfect mouth call (Primos double stack series) and still am in love with my first two pot calls ever purchased (Lil Deuce and Thunder Dome by Lohman).
Still cant find that perfect box call...
My point...you will have to search long and hard, use alot of calls, and make ALOT of mistakes before you find the call combo that you love and that gets the birds real dead.

Though I may not agree with what you say, I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Good advice.
I like Knight & Hale, and Primos for production pot calls. Mouth Calls, I like CANE CREEK. Their "lost poult" is what i will be using this spring.
