i live just west of s.d. line, i like the 4th weekend of april. seems like the weather is a little nicer, the spring grass is starting to grow. and the birds are really starting to call good.
I think the best time is when the weather cooperates. Last year wasnt able to go out the first weekend and it snowed there. Was able to go out the 3rd weekend and it snowed...was later on in the season before a decent weekend without snow came. Either way its a great time and one that I plan to do for quite a few years to come.
I think if you never have been in the Black Hills what you need to know , as the guys above said is that "It Snows" and they get a Ton of it at times. Your trip could be shut down for days as roads because part of the landscape. Chances or timing needs to with with the SD BlackHills hunters...BT
Amen to those posts. I have been out there one year in late April when we got 6" of snow and one year in early may when it was 90 degrees (very unusual I'm sure) but none the less the weather is always an issue in the Hills at that time. I will be there this year the first week of May, just b/c thats when my schedule allows. Any of you ever been to the Moonshine Gulch Saloon? We camp about 5 miles from there.
I was out there the last 2 years. Last year all the toms were hened up so bad we never did call one in. The year before it was just the oposite we limited out (4 birds) in the first 6 hrs. I would sugest early May. Let the hens go to nest.
