Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default Newbe questions and confusions.

This will be my first season turkey hunting and I'm very excited about it but I'm not sure what I'm getting into or what to expect. I have 2 shotguns (both winchester pumps a 20 ga. and a 12ga.) that I have had since childhood for deer hunting with slugs. I asked my friend if they would do and he said yes. Neither has a choke on it and I'm not even sure if you can put a choke on them. Here is the confusing part. He said I should get some turkey shot 3 1/4" for the 12 ga. but I can't find 3 1/4" shot am I missing something here or is he wrong?

Look on the barrel of the guns near the reciever. The choke should be stamped on the barrel. You should at least have a full choke, and extra full wouldn't hurt. You might be able to order an extra barrel that has screw-in choke tubes. I think you were confused about the 3 1/4" shells. You can only get 2 3/4", 3", and 3 1/2" shells for a 12 ga. Go with the 3" if your gun will shoot them. Again look at whats stamped on the barrel to see if it will shoot 3" shells.

Depending on the model, I would probably buy a new barrel for it. If you have been shooting slugs out of it for that long I am sure its wore down. You can find new barrels with screw in chokes for pretty much any gun.
