RE: Turkey Plot Question
Clovers, buckwheat, some ryegrains, and a good number of oats can be sowed in the winter to be up and ready throughout Spring and early summer. In summer, I don't irrigate the clover, buckwheat, and the oats, and they do reasonably well. The clover will be the year round crop, being both of White Dutch Clover and Crimson Clover, and that the White Dutch Clover will defiantely tolerate and survive drought. I find leaving up the oats for the turkeys to pick down helps them set up nests as well, for concealment being a key issue. The buckwheat brings in beneficial insects and others for the turkeys to eat, while discouraging the bad insect to be off your other crops. I also, by planting my crops of the selected plants, bring in a wealth of quail that I hunt as well.
