Default This Will Season Three For Me

This will be my Third Turkey season.

Turkeys 2 Me 0

The first time I knew nothing about what I was doing.
I got a set of Primos mouth calls.
Spent 8 or so hours learning to use them.
Two days later I was in the woods.
I had turkeys coming in.
But I imatated the wrong sound.
The Putt Putt sound, well that was all for the hunt.LoL

Then the second year.
I went and scouted for at least two months.
I sat in the woods well after dark.
I found where they were roosting.
And where they would be in the early mornings.

I went & set up heard two gobble.
They started getting farther away.
I did some soft yelps.
And one started coming back to me.
He sounded like 100 to 150 yards away.
He was coming closer.
Then he got quiet.
I slowed down on the soft yelps.
Then all of a sudden BOOM.
Then a couple seconds BOOM BOOM.

Well between me and the turkey was another hunter.
About 30 minutes later he walks right by me with,
A nice Tom hung over his sholder.
I asked him if he knew I was there and he said no.
I asked him how long he had been hunting here.
He said it was only his second time here.
I know he had just as much right to be there as me.
I spent over two months scouting.
And he just walks in and Talk about dumb luck.
At least he didn't shoot me.

Oh well maybe this spring will be better.

Good Luck To Every One

This will be my fourth, or will when I get home from Iraq and go in 2007, but I am fairing well. Three seasons, 4 turkeys........ filled both tags the first year, 1 the second, off to Korea, 1 the following year from Korea, and during the third before Iraq, 1. So I am ahead in the game myself....good luck!

Last year was my first and I killed two birds. Sounds like you might not of been close enough to the roost. You never heard or saw the other guy walk in?

I was on public hunting land.
The turkeys were on posted land.
I gues the other hunter and I came in from different directions.

At least I called one up even though some one else got it.
I think I was doing something right.

You were doing something right, to bad the other guy reaped your benifits. I like to run and gun more than just sitting and waint for the birds. That is why it is so important to get as close to the roost as possible. If you do mot mind hunting in the rain then find a field edge and set up there. We ahve all had frustrations while hunting, I know I had so many last year but patience and persistence paid off. Good luck it will happen.

Jrbsr, thats a tough one bud!You hunt enough and its going to happen to bad you got it right off the bat!!Bud...... learn from it though! If your going to spend 2 months in the woods before season(which is a wise thing to do)than dont throw all your eggs into one basket!I usually will have a minimum of 4 or 5 places to go where I know birds will be come your season opener! You just dont know as is your case here what can happen!!Good luck..Bob

Keep at it. Even failures are opportunities to learn. A hunter I was calling for had a bird shot out from under him. He could see it floping after the other hunters shot. They were there first. Didn't hear us come in, but heard my calling. He didn't call because he could see the bird coming to my call and knew it wold get to his wife first. I knew both of them and they lived right up the road so we helped take pictures headed off to try to find another bird. the important thing is to learn from the birds and keep trying.
