Hey, i'm pretty new to the game of turkey hunting. I really want to get into it and go this spring. So i kinda need some basic info like where and how to set up,what calls to use, when to set up, and things like that. Any help is good.
The first thing I do is scout my areas, to see if theres a change from season. I practice my calls all year round. Start with the basic calls, yelps, clucks and purrs. get a easy yelper or slate and practice with them then move up to the box call and mouth call. Practice getting the rythem down. I also like to roost birds in the evening so I know where to set up in the morning. Arrowmaster

Good camo, a comfortable seat, a call you have practiced with, a well-patterned shotgun you have patterned yourself and practiced with, and scouting. I camo all over..including gloves. I use a summit climber top on a tree placed low to ground ,if I have a scouted place picked out; or an innertube for a lawn mower tire partialled inflated to" run and gun" tied to my belt to sit on quickly..very comfortable and quiet. A 12g or 16g DB shotgun with 2 3/4" loads only ,patterned by myself. I have never found a need out to 45 yards for anything else larger in size. Out past 45 yds. ..no shot. I make my own box calls and do well with them, but commercial calls are all out there to use. Scout well, sit still, and call infrequently. Like most males, I like a quiet female with a soft voice. Go get 'em! Tony!
different sounds can SHOCK a gobbler into giving away his position crow calls, peacock, coyote, thunder, car doorsslamming, this one ranch i hunt has pheasnts and rooster chickens every morning they get the gobbling going on the limb
I tried a car door onetime for Locating, the darn thing was so heavy I had to get a friend to help carry it into the woods. When we got the gobbler going he shot the bird on me ! From now on I will only use the small locators
Owl calls are a locator call. Ive also heard them gobble to sirens and train whistles.

that's weird. i have a crow and owl call so i'll bring them along when i go. what time in the mornings and the evening do you guys usually set up and start calling? when do they come out of roosting?
I get out before first light and set up in a scouted place quietly. I don't use a locator call when I have roosted them the night before. I wait for the owls or hens to do the locating, and always after he has flown down, usually right after dawn. Once a tom gobbles, I call back "medium' loud to get his attention. If no answer, I may call a little louder. All depends on wind noise and direction. If I get an answer back, I'll call only once more, all dependent on distance tom is away. If he gobbles back, and he is close, say within 60 yards, he knows where I am, and I quietly wait for him. If no appearance in 10 min. I'll softly purr and watch for him circling around and coming in sneaky. If you get multiple gobbles, he more than likely will be coming straight in from his sounds, hot and heavy. Get gun up and ready in that general direction. Make no more calls, sit dead still, just wait. I always use a hen decoy to catch and misdirect his attention. Good luck, Tony!
