Default New to Turkey hunting. ?

I am planing on putting in for a tag for the 2006 spring hunt. I will be using my bow, and may have a pop up blind to hunt from. What are the basic thing I will need? The guy I will be going with said somthing about a decoy, do I need one. Also I will be on my own for the most part so I will need a call, what is a good one to start with, I figure I would pick one up this winter a practice alittle. Nothing fancy just a good call. I know they can see great, so should I try and put some cammo on my bow?

I cant beleve I am already thinking of turkey hunting in the spring.

Thanks for any help and if you have any tip I am all ears or eyes.

If youve never turkey hunted, and your going with a bow, I would definitely hunt from a pop up blind, It makes life a lot easier to get to full draw with a sharp set of turkey eyes nearby. If you have the blind, I would worry about adding more camo to your bow, unless it is shiny or something. As for calls, Id try a slate or glass call, get it now and practice with it, they are my favorite type of call, but you have to move your hands to operate it, but once again, something the blind will help with. Id also get a simple single or double reed mouth call to have for close in calling, and a little variety in your sounds. Good luck with it.

Decoys yes, and a good call. Push button yelpers are easy, but cant beat a good slate and mouth call. I prefer the triple reed myself. Quaker boy all the way.

Seeing how I also am trying turkey hunting this spring, the best way is to have a buddy "show you the ropes". My partner in addition wants me to practice my calling and he gave me a tape to listen to. This guy used to guide in Texas and knows his stuff, but insists on having a basic knowledge as apposed to going out blind.

Since it will be your first time I would start off getting either a push button box call or a regular box call. They are the easiest to use and sound great. As far as a decoy, no you dont need one. I usually dont use them but I have about 15 of the things. Sometimes you need them to bring a bird in and other times they scare birds off. For your first time I would say no, dont use one. If you are looking for a good video to actually teach you stuff about turkey hunting, search on the internet and but the video "So, you want to be a turkey hunter" by Hunters Specialties. It is an awesome video for beginner hunters and helped me understand alot of this my first season. Good luck and If you need any help throughout the season, let me know and I'll be glad to help.
