LAST SPRING I PLUCKED MY TURKEY ON MY FRONT PORCH, AFTER COMING BACK FROM GETTING IT WEIGHED. THERE WAS A FAIR AMOUNT OF LICE AMOUNG THE FEATHERS. I TAKE IT MY CAT AND DOG DIDN'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT GETTING THEM ( OR ME ), NOT THAT ANY OF US DID. THAT WAS MY FIRST TURKEY, BUT WON'T BE MY LAST. JUST CURIOUS ABOUT THESE PARASITES.
BT,bird lice is common among all bird species and as we know as of the present are harmless to humans!Everyturkey I have ever harvestedhas had lice, some more than others! As ugly and creepy feeling as they feel crawling on your skin they will soon fall off! They really present know threat to the bird either as long as the bird is physically able to take care of itself!Turkeys dust and preen quite often and although theres know factual proof, many believe dusting and preening help in controlling parasites on its host along with other beneficial factors linked to thisbehaviour. You would be surprised how many avian species of lice there actually are but "dont worry be happy"as long as you dont grow feathers you dont have to worry about harboring these little critters!!!!!!!
