Does anyone have any idea as to what Gunsmiths use to Polish the foringcone and barrel with ?
I do use the scotchbright pads , but can't seem to get the forcing cone area done right. I had it lengthened and it seems to be dull in this such area.
Just wondered if someone knew what they used to clean up and polish guns? ...BT
Don't know what they (g'smiths) use, but last year I tried steel wool. Can't remember what ##, but I wrapped it around either a .410 or 28 guage brush and went to town on the barrel with a cleaning rod chucked up in the drill. I wet the wool with cutting oil. It's messy, but it worked well. I then followed it up with the scotch pads and metal polish.

How much of an improvement is there in overall pattern density, with polishing?
I'm getting a great pattern at 40 yards, but would be completely bedazzled if it could be better...any downsides to polishing? I've got a year off to polish, and it sounds like a relatively quick & easy procedure...

I followed the directions posted here for polishing the barrel, and it SUCKED!!!!!!!! It ruined my patterns. I used the scotch brite pads and before polishing I was getting about 40 pellets in the kill zone at thirty yards, but afterwords got only about twenty pellets in the kill zone. And, it was shooting low. So, beware!! I had to get a used barrel from e-bay and then got back to the 40 pellets mark.

What kind of gun did you do it on? Some shotguns, like some of the Benellis, have chrome-lined barrels, so polishing with a scotch-brite would give horrible results I imagine. There were a load of people on here in the past couple years that tried this, and didn't have any complaints. I can't say if it improved my patterns as good as some say it did, but it definitely didn't make them worse. It also made cleaning very easy. Perhaps you polished to long, to fast, and got the barrel to hot and scored it.
i read ALOT on MANY boards about doing it yourself.....and NEVER read anyhting negative till now..........worked wonders for me........i agree also cleaning is easy.....all the gunk kinda slips right out........cant say i have any complaints.......

I've got the old reliable 870 rem. It did make it super clean, but after paying for a new barrel it was not worth it! I shot about 8 shells after I cleaned just in case, but it still shot off.
