A homebrew trailcamera uses a prebuilt PIR board. Put that in a waterproof pelican case. There are not a whole lot of cameras worthy of using, but they are not tough to find. You would be connecting the camera to the board with some kind of quick disconect being either a stereo jack or a servo. You have to open the camera up to do the hack which is attaching the wires to the appropriate places for the board to be able too control the camera. The wires would either be soldered or a shutter assembly slid in behind a ribbon cable. Drill holes in the case and put in glass and thats about it. The toughest part is cracking that camera open for the first time. It's a little intimidating at first, but once you do it, it's easy. Most times it can be done for $250 or less and the picture quality is second to none.
It didn't really explain it all that well, but most of it is there.
A homebrew videocam would just use some kind of videocamera to do the same, but would most times use an IR array for the light source.
I have 7 homebrews and 1 homebrew IR video setup. I will never go back to commercial cams again.
