My longbow came with a black rubber "protector" over the bottom limb tip. The string goes through the the little case and attaches to the bow. Do I leave this "protector" on while shooting? Is it there to protect while I string the bow? Thanks.

Double, I'm not sure what you mean. Can you put a picture up. It sounds like protection for shipping. Does it have another end to it? Most of the times stringers have either two ends like you described with a string (parrachutt cord) that attaches to both. Or some have one end and a loop that goes over the opposite limb, the string runs through the loop when stringing it up. Maybe just call the bowyer up and ask. Personally, I wouldn't think that you would leave it on.

It had a string keeper with it also, so it could be part of that.
It's definitley not for shipping. It just slips right over the bottom limb tip and has a hole through which the string goes and the string then stays attached to the nock/groove.
I assumed it was for protection when propted on the ground, etc.

It's a tip protector, and your assumption is correct. It's designed to keep you from scarring up the bow tip when leaning it up against a tree to pull arrows. Side benefit, it keeps the bottom loop from falling off the bow when you unstring the bow. I don't use one, but I know several folks who do. You can leave it on or take it off, whichever you prefer.
yuppers you can leave it on. The nice thing about them vs the leather tip protecters is they dont hold water. Keeps ya from rotting your string out day by day.
Yeah, they're a snug fit and they'll stay put when shooting. The only limb protector I've ever seen be a problem is the one on a friend's bow. It's leather and he's had it so long that the leather has dried up and gotten stiff. Not only that, but it's loose too. The thing rattles like crazy when he shoots. Drives me nuts shooting with him, but he's dang near deaf and doesn't mind it at all.
