Default NEWBIE: Bow info?

I looked at an old Bear bow I keep in my workshop and found the following info on it.
Its a 1953 Bear Polar, AMO 66", 45#.
Can anyone tell me more about the bow? What type of string I should use? Length, etc...

THANX

If you go to Stickbow.com they have a search feature, if you put in "Bear" you will find a lot of information on Bear bows. There are a lot of collectors of these bows that would be gald to give you infomation.

I don't know anything abou tthe bow except it sounds like a collector's item. Neat find.

Here's the link to Bear history and info:

Most people are happy to give out information especially about things they are interested in. Not too many get GALDED about it. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> (Sorry, IC. Just couldn't resist.)

It seems that the 1953 date on the bow is the date the recurve limb design went into place. The bow could have been made between 57-70. In any case the bow is in excellant condition but I still need a new string. Does anyone know what I need?

AMO 66' WOULD BE THE LENGTH WHICH WOULD ACTUALLY BE AROUND 62&quot; NO FAST FLIGHT. DACRON ONLY. NUMBER OF STRANDS WOULD BE BY THE POUNDAGE....? 12.....A PRO SHOP SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIX YOU UP WITH THE CORRECT STRING.

I finally found a bow shop (went to 3 different ones) in my area that knew something about traditional archery and had a string that would fit my bow.
After stringing the bow (with a bow stringer), I measured the brace height. It measures almost 8&quot;. Does this sound right? It seems a bit long to me. I measured the bow's AMO and it was 66&quot;, the string (66)measured out about 62&quot; so all seems right.

A brace height of about 8 1/2&quot; would be a good starting point for a 66&quot; bow. Adjust the height upwards/downwards in 1/4&quot; increments 'til it sounds the quietest. Set the nock about 1/2&quot; high and adjust it up/down in 1/16&quot; increments 'til you get the best arrow flight.

LURP (?)-Here is some advice I would give to you just starting out.Sounds like you've got a real nice bow to get started out with.Instead of standing yourself out in front of a target, for the first day anyway,go out to the woods or a field and just rove around and take shots at anything you see(I shouldn't have to stress safety at this point-right?).You see ,I believe that shooting a stick bow is a very natural thing everyone knows how to do it -I realized this while tying to teach my grandson-heck he just picked up the bow and started shooting it I was amazed! What i am trying to say is that this exercise will introduce you to shooting your bow-you'll kind of get to know one another, shoot at stuff near or far don't worry about form or rules unless you want to for this first meeting-have fun thats what it is all about.
