Default Fast flite strings?

I was shooting my "Lil Magnum" Selway long bow and it came with a fast flite string. This bow has the horn tips. I drew my bow back and "WHAM", the arrow fell at my feet, upon examing the bow the top loop of the fast flite string was cut in half and part of the top horn tip is missing. What I am wondering is--Is it ok to shoot a fast flite string with horn tips on a bow? Does fast flite string slowly wear down the horn tips over a period of time of shooting?

I had a bow break and the tips which were horn were both broken but only one limb was ruined. The builder of the bow told me that horn has a grain and needs to be aligned so the string will lay across the grain of the horn. String was fast flite. Bow was Osage self-bow.

Not too sure on the horn, but were the loops in the string paded out? I have seen a couple of old bows not made for FF) with the tips literally sawn off by unpadded FF strings.

There was no padding on the loop ends.

After this episode---I will not be using fast flite strings anymore, unless somebody convinces me 100% otherwise...

On a bow that's built for it, I won't use anything other than Dynaflight '97 or 450+. I've had zero problems so far, and have had none reported to me. You could say I handle a lot of bows and strings, and talk to a lot fo people. Sounds like yours may have been a fluke or a mistake in the overlays--but I do understand being gunshy now.

Maybe bowshy!!!

I sent the bow off to the bowyer, and emailed him about what took place and also sent the original f.f. string so they can try to piece together on just what went wrong--was it the string? or the horn tips?

If there is anyone else that has had problems with f.f. strings I would greatly appreciate the input, RobinHood36

My bows are built to use ff but for the wear on the bow and only about a 5fps difference in bow speed I see no value to using the stuff. I use only 450+ on all my bows and the advantage is it last a long time and there is less stress on my bow.

CB, the main reason I use Dyna '97 on my bow (most of the time anyway--right now got a 450+ string on it just for a change of pace) is the durability and lack of stretch/creep. 450+ won't be any less stressful on your bow though--it has the least stretch/creep of any material on the market--even less than Dynaflight or FF. I don't see it as being a problem for bows that are made to handle it though--been using them on my Crusader for years. With my draw length I put it to the test.

FF and Dynaflight are made from the same material, Dyneema. Original FF is Dyneema 65, Dyna is Dyneema 75--a little higher grade of the same material. 450+ is Dyneema 75 and Vectran--the Vectran reduces the stretch/creep even more, but fuzzes up a bit more than Dyna.
