Anyone else out hunting these. I went out last Sunday with four other guys and a beagle and chased up six that I saw and I was able to get arrows off at three but missed. I'm using Bodkins and judo points and the brush is killing me. I shot a broadhead at one and it bounced off the brush and took off in the wrong direction. I can't wait to get out again. I am thinking about getting a Basset Hound to chase rabbits with and changing my tips to blunts or .38 cases to clear the brush. This type of hunting is a blast with a longbow if you havn't tried it.
I've hunted wabbits for a couple years now with some success, but don't use a dog. I stalk along like I'm huntin deer. Mainly because I'm also huntin hogs, other game and doing some stump shootin too. The little cottontails are all over out here so there's usually some action while they're in season. I don't use judo's for anything but stumps. Instead I use the Magnus blunt. Sometimes with the blade and sometimes without. I havn't hunted them with the Crusader yet, but have taken the Don Brown Woodsman out and you're right, it is a real blast with a longbow. Heck, anyday I can carry a bow into the woods is a real blast, whether I see any critters or not.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Oh man, the sound of a beagle striking a fresh trail! I wish I still had my pack, would be much more fun w/a bow...I've taken several wabbits w/bow but not using dogs. I really miss those three: Snoopy, Fred, & Ginger.
I have hunted wabbits for many years with the bow (have not shot a gun in over 16 years) & there is nothing like it.
I have used the 38 casings on cedar shafts exclusively & had no problems with stopping rabbits with this combo from a 45lb. recurve or a 53lb. longbow.
I also use this setup because I often hunt with a group (without dogs) & it is a safe way if an arrow does go astray.
You're killin' me here. Rabbit's been losed for over a month. Never hunter them with a bassett before, but I hear that since they move slower it makes for a more laid-back hunt.
Personally, I won't shoot small game with blunts anymore. I'm making my own small game heads again with .38 or .357 cases, weighed up with lead, and a 7/8" steel blade sid into the front. Kind of a "poor man's" Magnus blunt. But hey, they only cost me about 20 cents each to make.
JRW I am blessed or cursed with a job that keeps me working six dsays a week and teenagers who mange to use up the remaining time I have. I was shooting Bodkin Broadheads and judo tips both which was causing me trouble getting through the brush. I'm going to experiment with 160 gr. field points that I plan to alter. If I can saw jagged edges and bend them outward before I glue them on I may have the perfect rabbit arrow. I'll let you know how this works out after I do a few.
So you are trying to rig up a heavy "game nabber" type of point? If you shoot a field point into a concrete wall they will sometimes curl out like that, or so I have been told.
Hey Dick, I think you know what you can do with those WW heads! Blunt the tips with a grinder and you have great wabbit-woodsmans!

I have hunted hares with a bow for 30+ years. They are one tough little animal to kill. I always use broadheads and have shot some where the heart was literaly cut in half yet they still keep on ticking for a few minutes screaming like a baby all the time. Very unnerving.
