Default Hey guys...I'll be pickin' your brains (pics up)

Hello trad. guys,I've been lurking around here on and off for awhile, but I'll be in here more often asking questions..I recently got a Bear supermag 48 recurve a couple weeks ago, and have been messing around when I've had time after school and work.

I got a lot of respect for you guys.. this trad. archery stuff is no joke, much more challenging. Im looking forward to having a lotmore free time coming up to practice, so expect some questions. From what I've read thus far,I know I can learn a lot from you all.

-Adam

edit: almost forgot...not sure if"man law" exists outside the bowhunting forum, butI'll take a picture when I get home and post it up (although its a prettycommon bow you all know of Im sure)

Ignore the broadhead target.. Im not shooting broadheads with it yet, just needed something to help it stand. A lot of my questions were answered when you guys helped out ZachCL, but I'll have a lot more..The previous owner must have shot vanes off the shelf, but other than that the bow isin perfect condition.Im a little concerned about my draw weight right now, but I couldn't pass up the deal.

Adam,
First let me say welcome to the wonderful obsession of Traditional Archery. I would like to ask you if you spoke to anyone before your purchase of your bow. I ask because I would like to know why you bought such a short bow to start shooting traditional with. A short bow is much harder and much more unstable to shoot and you have one of the shortest. May I ask what poundage your bow is, what your draw length is and how long have you been shooting bows in general?

Yes,I understand this. I really hadn't planned on buying a recurvefor awhileconsidering Ive only taken 2 deer with a bow ( last year was my first year bowhunting)...But when someone decides to sell a perfectly good recurve for 50 bucks, I drove to the ATM right then..

The draw weight is 55 pounds and my draw length is 29". That is why I was concerned, because I wanted a pretty light draw weight to start out with trad.

As far as the shortness of the bow, I understand that it is harder. But I like to challenge myself. I know it is going to take a lot of practice, and I highly doubt I will be hunting with it Fall of '09.Ishot my compound for a little over a year before I took it into the woods. I want to be confidentwhen it comes to taking an animal.I still have a lot of confidence to build in regard to my compound, but hey,why not get into traditional archery for fun.

Looking forward to learning from you guys..

Adam.

Is your draw 29" on a compound???

If it is then expect to lose 1" to 2" of draw when going trad.

I do agree with VA.
IMHO it is way to short for a beginner, you can overcome the weight by slowly building up your muscles but a real short bow is going to bring on bad habbits that your going to have a hard time fixing.

Now that would be a damn shame. You were very lucky to find that bow at that price. It happens to be a very fine bow, indeed. I would if at all possible try to find another one of lower poundage and greater length. Consider the money you saved on that one as a down payment on another used one. I always try to suggest going onto one of the auction sites and finding a Bear Grizzly or Hunter. They are plentiful and comparitively inexpensive. They are proven and time tested reliable shooters. If that's not an option then GET OUT THERE AND HAVE AT IT! Bows were made to shoot, have fun and practice hard, but always remember form, form, form. Were here to help if you need us.
