Default Need help with a bow refinisher.

Can someone give me the name of the best person around for refinishing the riser on my re curve bow?

I had it made several years ago by the best bow maker in the US. I stored it in an aluminum bow case when it had never even had the limbs mounted, I was injured and unable to pull the bow.
The finish on the riser turned a med/dark brown and shows no color. It was made from the best piece of exhibition Coco Bolo I could find and was gorgeous now it is a mess, the limbs were not affected nor the front of the riser. I have no idea what happened.

Just sand the riser down working from 80 grit paper to 320 grit paper to take out any scratches the 80 grit might put in..
When you have you have it back to bare Cocobolo wipe it down with acetone then seal the Cocobolo with super glue spreading it and working it in with your finger ( dont stop the movement with your finger otherwise you will stick to the riser)

Let the super glue dry over nite sand back with 320 grit paper till it's nice and smooth the get a can of Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane spray on a coat let dry lightly sand back with 320 and apply another coat and it will be as good as new.

The one thing you have to do with Cocoblo and other Rosewoods is seal them otherwise the oil thats in the wood will seep out discoloring it.

Isn't there some other sealant that would work Russ?I can imagine someone trying to type you a angry email while fingers adhered to a riser![:@]Wouldn't all the oils be gone eventually with a piece of wood worked down to the sizes you are working with.Only experience I have with rose wood is on gripcaps and fore ends on rifles and they have epoxy finishes on them.

Rowel

No.

The RD I just finished still had to be sealed and I had that piece of Cocobolo in the shop for a long time plus it was kiln dried.

Sure you can use an epoxy finish or even Deft but for the cost a tube of super glue is only a buck and the urethane is around $5.

If Changeling is not too sure he can do it he can send the riser to me and I will do it for a small fee seeing I dont have any orders to fill at the moment.

Id shoot it with a two part epoxy finish or deft. Deft, shalach, and some laquirs, as well as epoxy finishes wont require sealing. Or what ive done on several oily wood finishes was, use shalach or deft to seal it, then sprayed it with poly or what other finish I wanted to use.

Thanks for the replies guys but this is not something I want to try and do myself. This bow cost me a lot of money when money was scarce, not that things are much better these days for me and most people. Now that president (Bush) wants me and everyone else to pay for those expensive homes that people bought that couldn't afford them in the first place! I won't say nothing else about that.

Anyway, I want it done really well, and shot with the "Thunder bird brand satin finish". There is another problem that just came to mind though, if it is done with the Thunder bird brand finish, will the limbs be an exact match?

I know that Coco Bolo is an oily wood but why didn't it ruin the same wood on the limb fadeouts and the front of the riser?

Kanga, I just emailed O.L. Adcock the builder of the bow to see what he can do. I probably should have done this in the first place.
Lets wait till he replies, he had a posting on his web site that it might take a while to answer emails and that he is not taking any new orders, I sure hope he is OK.

I know OL, he built me several bows.

You have a 3 piece TD longbow then? Pre-ACS/CX ?

OL is a good man. He might refinish it for you, I dunno, he's a super busy fellow with A&H archery now.

droptine orbowdoc- eitheris the man you want to refinish your bow.

You ought to call Bill Dunn from zipper bows also. He puts a top notch finish on a bow. And is used to sealing oily woods like you got.

OL's finishes are not that great, but not bad. I never saw his bows as things of beauty. More of performance. But zipper I do.
