I was going through some of my old VHS tapes the other day and found this video of my hog hunt from 1995. I edited out my buddy's hunt because he used a Ruger .44 mag and that's not Trad related.
We picked Clarkrange Hunting Lodge ( http://www.kenmoody.com/?page_id=2 )because of the Dan Fitzgerald videos. We ran after those dogs half of the morning before I was able to get a pig beyed for a shot.
This was the first and last time I ever hunted with dogs.
BOW: Ben Pearson, Colt
ARROWS: Cedar
BROADHEADS: Bear Razorheads (green)
Using dogs for pigs is kinda like using them for raccoon or squirrel. You don't technically have to, but it makesfindinghogseasier and you can share your love of hunting with some of your best friends. Your dogs.

Not when they cause an animal pain its not. Theres a reason why the vast majority of the Scottish public wanted to ban fox hunting (go figure). Duck hunting with dogs is great as the ducks are dead most of the time the dog goes to fetch them but im not into the whole letting the animal suffer anymore than it needs to. Quickest death policy for me.
That hog was already dead but just wouldn't give up. The shot not only was a double lung but split the heart dead center. A follow up shot would not have brought the pig down any faster. Not only that but you saw the dogs running around, there was too much of a chance of hitting one of them.

Here's the way I see it. If the hog had of run like a deer might, you would wait 15-30 minutes before trailing it to give it time to die before running it off even further. Only thing here is that we actually see the death process for what it is. I didn't go back and time it but what was it? 2 minutes tops?
Would I have shown the death process on the video? Probably not. But I didn't shoot the video. va bowbender gave a "graphic warning" so no need to criticize. It was his first traditional kill. I'm still looking for mine. He made a well placed shot with total penetration just short of complete pass through. I've never hog hunted but always wanted to. I enjoyed watching the hunt.
