Default It's time to get serious about BH's

I've made a pact that I will hunt with traditional equipment, only, in '08.....until I have a deer on the ground....or the closer catches me. So....I need to get serious about BH's.

I'm shooting a Fred bear Montana Longbow.....50#'s....and to be honest...I couldn't tell you which arrows (aluminumns).

I bought a 6 pack of 2-blade COC BH's last year just to see if I could tell a discernable difference in arrow flight (v. FP's). I can't. I suppose the traditional equipment isn't (or...I can't discern it, to be more correct) as "precision" in "some" peope's hands....and that's the reason. I'm confident I can get the job done at MY effective range....and that's all I need to know. I'd like to get the heads, now, and shoot them all summer. Then....re-buy and reload.

So.....what's the best BH for my scenario (in your opinions)? I "think" the magnus 4 blade is something I wanna look at....but I'm all ears.

Good luck to all of you this fall.

I've used magnus in the past with great results. I have had issues with the head coming loose from the ferrul, but that's more of a glue issue than anything. I'll probably shoot magnus 2 blade again this year, but may try Zwickey...

To be honest, any 2 blade coc that is really sharp will do the trick.

Hey there Jeff!! Hows things been going?

As for broad heads you sure can't go wrong with shooting a Magnus Head. I think most of the Magnus heads are all super heads. The ones I really don't care for are the Snuffer SS and the Buzzcut. The reasons are Snuffer SS= Small 3 blade, just as well could shoot a 2 blade with inserts that you eluted to already. Buzzcut= Seraded edge.

I think you could also shoot the Magnus Snuffer that I'm shooting. Its a 3 blade with an 1 1/4 to 1 15/32 cutting diameter, the cutting diameter depends on what style and weight of Snuffer you would go with. One thing about the Snuffers I shoot is the point on the Snuffer is sharper then anything you will ever see when sharpened and ready to go, its nice for penetration. As far as that goes any 3 blade thats a COC will be like that. I've been shooting these heads for 17 years now and I'll never go back to anything else unless for some reason they change them up to where I don't like them.

The broad head you eluted to that you want to try is also a great choice. Is the 4 blade head your talking about a solid head meaning the inserts are not removable? Thats the one nice thing about the Snuffer, its a solid one piece durable head.

Usually 4 blade magnus or phantoms don't fly well for me. I have had to take out the bleeder. I suggest what i did. I own Phatoms, magnus, and simmons. Try em all and see what you like. One thing for sure, they will tell you if you have a good release and/or correct spine for your bow.

I also suggest doing 60% of your practice from a treestand. I know alot of good ground shooters, but I have put them in my 15ft stand only for them to be shocked on where they hit. I have learned myself here recently, that I can shoot my 66lb longbow well from the ground, but can't shoot that heavy from a elevated limited space stand.

This post is based on nothing but my reading from this and other sites. I have no real world experience "yet" on broadhead performance.
I've yet to hear a bad thing about magnus heads. I am choosing to go with the 2 blade stingers only because elk will be part of my intended quarry and wanted as much penetration as possible. It's not the biggest cutting dia, which I am a little leary of, but sharpness, placement and penetration should make up for that issue.

So that being said, and SHARP, qulaity 2 blade head should do you fine. Magnus is a good one, but I've also heard good things about STOS, and Zwickey.

Yep, Magnus 2 blade 125gr Stingers for me and my 56# Longbow as well......they fly great and are as sharp out of the package as it gets. Not terribly expensive either (lifetime warranty too if you crack one up)
I trust them 100% from my longbow.

I am shooting a variety of heads out of my bows based upon the energy they put out. I will use the Magnus Snuffer 3 blades from my Black Widow because its cranking them out with the 62# draw weight and can handle the extra blade and diameter. I don't quite trust them from the longbowwhich is a little lighter in the energy department and decided early on I wanted to shoot a good 2 blade.

I would also shoot my 220gr Muzzy Phantoms from both if I wanted to up the arrow weight a bit but I'd shoot it as a 4 blade from the recurve and a 2 blade from the longbow again based upon the actual energy output and the different configurations just being a slightly better compliment to each.

I have a few others but those will be the game time heads for this season.

I'm using brass inserts and No Mercy heads - after reading all the Asby reports I'm sold on single bevel

One of my best friends, who has killed more critters with a recurve than anyone I know, swears by the Magnus 2-blade.

I've had good luck with Ribteks and Wensel Woodsmans. I plan on giving Ace a try next season.
