I am pretty new to traditional bowhunting - can I refletch cedar arrows with new feathers once they are showing signs of wear? If so what is the process?
Thanks,
Mike
Worn feathers are not a problem but missing feathers are. You would be surprized how much feather can be missing and still get good arrow flight. Broadhead tiped arrows can be a little more fussy. I use a sharp knife andpeel off the old pieces of feather being careful not to damage the wood. Use fine sandpaper to smooth the surface and touch up the area with some kind of sealant. Fletch as usual. They won' t look as pretty but the cost of shafts is skyrocketing. They should shoot just fine. dick
I pretty much do the same as Dick; when it' s time to replace, I take a sharp razor blade and remove as much vane and glue as possible w/o cutting into the wood. I' ll then give a very fine sanding and re-dip the shaft in gasket lacquer and refletch.
Same as these guys. Just rip it off, then take a knife and carefully clean the rest of the quill off; making sure not to cut into the wood. Sanding it, or scraping with a knife, will get the minute pieces of glue and quill off and should leave a good surface for refletching.
