Default What size feathers 5" or 5 1/2"??

Currently using 5" shield cut feathers on my 32" 2117's and 31" Arrow Dynamics. Target points fly good. I've always used 5". Would the 5 1/2" give better flight stability with broadheads? Any other benefits to 5 1/2" shield cut feathers?

I never had a reason to go to 5.5"--5" feathers (usually shield cut) have always worked fine, with or without broadheads. The higher cut will be a little noisier--you might want to go to parabolic cut if you go with a high-profile feather (parabolic is the quietest cut).

I use 5" parabolics on my woods and carbon arrows. Both fly real well with broadheads.

I am shooting the big 5.5"ers and have been for awhile now. I however like LBR dont nessicarly see the need and am starting to rethink what I am doing on the feather department.

If your arrows are spined right, your bow AND arrows are tuned, and your form is even reasonalby well, there is no need for the big 5.5"ers. If you look at the greats of the past, few if any use anything close in heigth to the bannana or highback sheilds.

The big reason folks use them whether knowingly or not is more to hide mistakes or "possible" mistakes. I was in this group thinking it was better to have them 5.5"ers then do it right to begin with. Now its time to redo it and get it right!

I used the 5.5s for a couple of years and found that the 5" shields were quieter and flew just as well with broadheads attached. Like was stated, get the spine right and the tune right and you won't experience any problems with flight from the smaller feather.
