Default My first Whitetail hunt is coming up!

Hey there guys,

I've got my first whitetail deer hunt coming up on the 24th of this month......10 days and counting! I'm flying from Oregon back to Illinois to hunt with a seasoned traditional hunter i met on an archery forum. I'm takingthe take down recurve i built myself this summer.I'm looking formy first harvest with trad equipment on this trip too.I hunted elk with my longbow this fall, and enjoyed the experience completely. No elk meat hanging, but some great hunts with a few close encounters of the furry kind.

I'll be huntting from a tree stand for these whitetail deer. I have never taken a deer from a tree before either. The only thing i've ever harvested out of a tree stand is a red fox. the many blacktail deer that walked under my stand here were small bucks or doe....i passed up a bunch of those.I did have a lot of fun dropping pebbles on their heads though.....That's good sport! You ever see a deer do a back flip? Try bonking a small rock off their antlers some time. It's halarious!

Well i'm just about all packed up, and am shooting a couple times a day....Its hard to concentrate on work, thinking about my trip all the time....i just had to share my excitement here guys......

I'm new to this white tail hunting....any pointers you want to share?

Anyone have any experience with transporting frozen meat on an airline?

I've never had a chance to hunt elk or blacktail, but I think you are in for a new experience all the same. Be sure to get in some tree stand practice (remember to bend at the waist). Hope for a shot at a relaxed deer. One of my best friends shot at a wary buck a few days ago--maybe a 10 yd shot. He was shooting a quiet longbow, from a blind. The buck came in on pins and needles--practically jumped at every step. Anyway, when Dan dropped the string, the deer's belly almost hit the ground, and his fletchings parted hair on it's back.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Chad

Aw Chad.....You really need to come out and elk hunt with me some time.I know its kind of spendy.....I was walking down these perfectly flat oldskid road thinking of you this season.....I was right in the middle of some really steep looking mountains, but i know the hiddy holes that don'ttake a 30 year old athlete toget too.....

I felt bad for you missing your chance this year. Hunting elk on the coast in Oregon or even Washington has the advantage of mild pleasant weather for the most part....when it gets rainy and ugly....the hunting is so good you don't even mind.....i had my chance at em a few times too this year.....just wasn't in the cards for me i guess....give it some thought bro....i got a feeling i'm not going to have the only long bow in the valley next year.....Kirk

Here's what i rigged up for tree stand practice...you'll love this! My tree stand is already in a tree in Illinois right now. I shipped it ahead weeks ago.
