Default Traditional Archery store

I love the outdoors and love archery. I wonder how a traditional oriented store would work? I have no idea on how to get it started. I know the range would bring in some money and arrow sales would also. So give me some opinions I dont know if I could afford it. I found a place in town but the lease is $1500 a month

Our trad shop has been open since Jan of 07. It's doing well but, 1500 a month rent is way to steep in my opinion. If you are not able to sustain the business expenses for 1 year without making a sale, you may find it a pretty rough going.

It's a hard row to hoe. I can think of only two businesses that are traditional-only that don't (as far as I know) have side jobs or businesses to make ends meet.

One problem is these bows aren't automatically outdated when next year's model comes out. Another is with the products that you will move on a more regular basis (arrows, points, targets, etc.) there's a huge amount of competition. A lot of the time the big guys get better prices because they can afford to buy more at a time. Finally, there's just not as many of us around vs. compounds and firearms, and a lot of folks like to make their own stuff. Finally, there's the internet--to some a blessing, to some a curse. You can find dang near anything on it, and get it shipped to your door. It can be tough establishing a reputation, usually takes quite a while, and you have lots of competition. On the other hand, if you can hand in there long enough to establish a good reputation, you will sell a lot more vs. catering only to your local market.

I'm not trying to scare you away from it, this is just my experience. There's not even a local compound shop in my area. I know the guy that used to run one, and it just got to be more of a hassle than anything else. He ran a desiel repair shop in back of the archery shop to pay the bills, then when Wal-Mart started carrying arrows and such, along with everyone getting catalogs from Cabela's, Gander Mountain, etc. he just couldn't compete. One of the closest archery stores in my area also carries guns, clothing, boots, knives, etc. etc. etc.--a huge amount of inventory. The other is a John Deere tractor dealership which also has a farm supply store--the archery section is just a small part of a huge store.

Long story short, if you have the time and cash (forgot to mention how time consuming it is, especially when hunting season comes around), it can be a lot of fun, but it's a bugger to make any money with.

yea thought they were crazy with lease and would definately have to carry more than just traditional. Compounds, clothing, boots and, such as targets. Would be fun but not sure closest shop is more than 30 miles away and walmart carries limited stuff where I am at.
