Default Black Widow IronWood Longbow

Thinking of buying a PLV black window longbow. Anyone ever try one? Do you think it would outperform my 50lb Martin Savannah shooting 175fps with 500gr arrow?

New one or old one? JMO, but for my useI wouldn't pay $5 for a truck load of the old ones, based on the ones I shot.

The newer style is a huge improvement, but I don't think you'll pick up much if any performance vs. the Martin. You might tinker with the string (material, strand count, and serving length),brace height, and nock fit and pick up considerably more speed--a lot cheaper than buying a new bow.

If you are considering a new one, use the "try before you buy" offer and see if there's any massive gains vs. the Martin.

I can't remember when they made the change--an '05 model may be a "new" one.

I'm not sure when they went from the LAG(old) to the PL(new) bows but my PLX is a '04.My brother had a 62" PLV,61#@28" and that bow was so smooth shooting.Very consistant thru the draw, fast and no handshock at all.I shoot considerably lower poundage bows and his was so easy to draw and anchor.Very accurate, also

Not meaning to start any fires or chast any flames but, there is always a but you know. New one, old one, recurve, longbow, IMHO they are over priced for what you get. I have a close friend who makes bows, good shooting bows, fast, smooth, and great shooters. They are hand made bows, not cut on a machine and are just as good as any BW made. Yes I have owned a BW MAII grey and sold it. Would not trade one of my friends bows for a dozen BW's. Whew, glad I got that off my chest!

Thanks Jim--pretty sure that would mean the one BC is looking at is a "new" one. The old ones I shot had decent speed, but way more hand shock than any other deflex/reflex I ever shot. The "new" design is a big improvement IMO. Still not the best in my hands, but a decent bow.

Lol COB--we know how you are. Personally, I think a lot of bows out there are priced well over what they are worth (to me anyway), including BW--but that's just me. The two I've owned (both recurves) were solid bows, and Ken Beck and company seem like really nice guys, but......well, I can't afford to pay more because I like the guys who sell them. I got both of mine VERY cheap (used), and sold them.

Besides, your shooting stinks equally regardless of the bow you are shooting.

Yea, the more I thought about it, the more I think I am going to pass. I shot Matt/PA's ironwood recurve takedown, and it was the least shock recurve I ever shot. But heavy. So my mind started thinking about picking up a longbow. But 750 dollars for a used one just seems steep.

Don't know what they cost, but I'm sure that's at least 2-3 hundred less than a new one. On the other hand, you get no warranty, and $750 will buy some very nice new bows, plus accessories.
