Aka "fistmele'", it's generally measured from the deepest part of the grip, although in some cases it's measured from the back of the shelf.

Since you don't have bolts and screws to crank (on most trad bows anyway), you have to tune where you can. Brace height affects noise andhand shock primarily. Finding the proper brace for your bow will result in a quieter and more pleasant shot. Too low or too high can even damage your bow.

Generally speaking, a higher brace is quieter, a lower brace is faster. Check with the bowyer or manufacturer for a recommended range and tune from there.

Your bow is designed to be shot at a specific brace height range, my Widow are 7 - 7 7/8 of an inch. Your shooting style, and the spine arrows you select will determine the best brace heigth for you. Like Chad stated, higher generally provides the shooter with a more silent/forgiving bow. The lower can give you a little more speed, but in my experience it is a trade off. I typically shoot at the higher end of the manufacturers recommended brace height, I get the best tune, with the least amount of trouble.

I like a silent string when I hunt, the heavier my arrows(585 - 625 grns for my 58 -62 pound longbows), the good height on my string take care of that. Until someone makes a recurve or longbow that shoots a 600 grain arrow 800 feet per second, I am not that interested in speed.....a silent bow, that is stable is what I'm talking about.....

Not To mention that a low brace can really do a number on your arm, by the string hitting it and scraping it.
