Default Opinions on a new recurve

Hi everyone. I have been looking at these boards for awhile. I need some advice. I used to shoot recruve when I was younger. Target practice only. I am now 29. I never hunted deer with the recurve because it was only a 35 pounder. I have hunted with compound and gun but I cant get the thought of hunting with a recurve out of my mind. A friend of mine has a couple. One of his that I really like is a Bear Super Kodiak, 60" long and 60 pound pull. I can shoot it pretty good out to 18 to 20 yards. I have thought about buying one after Christmas. That way I can have about 10 months to practice. Is this bow a good one to start out with? I have hunted deer since I was 12 and I want something different. This type of hunting (with a recurve)is calling me like nothing ever has before. Its like a hunger. I have found a new Bear SK for around $390. What do you think.

Thanks in advance.

I know better for less price!

Also look around, for 390 bucks you can get some real steals on bows. Not to say a bear bow isnt a good bow but for that price you have almost endless options in the used market. Dont be hesitant about buying used as I have seen and purchased some great deals used!

Dan is right, your options are almost endless and there are much better bows out there for a lot less money, but if you have your heart set on spending almost 400.00 on a production bow, the Bear will do fine for you.

If you are comfortable tugging the weight of the bow you're practicing with and you are getting all of the draw with it, then you can handle it on any bow that you purchase, so weight shouldn't be a problem. I do caution you against becoming over bowed. It will create many problems that are very difficult to get rid of. Shoulder problems can develope, target panic can creep in and so on.

Make em sharp and shoot em straight, or leave em home.

PMC - I know this board can sometimes seem a little brand loyal, but that is for good reason. I think you really owe it to yourself to &quot;Chek&quot; out some other bows. The super kodiak is a fine bow, I almost bought one myself but I knew I could do better. For $100 less, I found a bow that is made of exotic woods under clear glass instead of a production bow under black glass. I think it shoots better and I get compliments on my Chek-mate Raven all the time. I almost gaurantee you will make your buddy jealous. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> For almost $200 less than a super kodiak, you could have yourself a nice CM Falcon. Don't let the price fool you, get out and shoot one for yourself! If you decide on the Bear, I'm sure it will be a great bow for you too.
Good luck and have fun.

sorry I dont mean to sound harsh, I have that tendancy at times.

I should have started out saying that bear is a FINE shooting bow, but for 390 bucks you can get custom bows used in excellent shape! Not to mention brand spanking new martins, also a fine beginner bow. And last be least the Checkmates. I am loyal to a bow that shoots well and feels well to ME, there are just so many out there...shop before you spend that kind of money, thats what I am really trying to say.

If you need a hand looking, or some steering in the right direction email me I'll be glad to help.

Lilhunter, you didnt sound harsh at all. No reason to be sorry.

Wahya, True Position, Lilhunter, thanks for your info and opinions! You guys have been great. I now have more to think about. I am going to start another thread on Chek-Mate bows.

Thanks again.
