Default help with finish on my old favorite bow.

I noticed this season that my old Herters bow has some checking in the varnish on the fade of the lower limb. I love this old bow, and it is truly a beauty, I was wondering what to use to refinish the bad varnish. My bow is in great condition, other than the small amount ofchecking on the lower limb. What would you suggest using to refinish the lower limb with. Urithane, Polyurithane, Verithane, Laquire???????? This is by far my favorite Traditional bow, and hate to see the old girl looking bad.

Polyurethane is the way to go, after sanding off teh original finish, wipe off with acetone and spray away.

I'll go a step further and recommend a specific brand. Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane. Wallyworld ought to have it. If not, Lowes or Home Depot does. Spray very thin coats and build up the finish gradually. It'll eventually peel off if you only use a couple of heavy coats. Found that out the hard way.I use the stuff on my wood arrows too.

After giving it a try, I really like using Tru-Oil gunstock finish on wood risers and overlays, but poly is better on the glass.

If you use polyurethane make sure you steel wool between your coats. This will prevent peeling of the finish.

Thanks everyone. I had thought to use Poly, just wanted to double check.
