Default How much KE is enough?

My buddy has a home made long bow which has a 40lb pull at 28" draw. He chrono'd his arrow speed at 130 fps which gives him 15 ftlbs of ke with his 413gn cedar shaft. Is this enough bow for whitetails?

just barely legal in Texas (40#min)
I wouldn't take a shot over 20yds
(but that's about how far most bow kills are)
make sure he has a good, hard, sharp broadhead!

I'd build another bow. KE is a poor way to judge performance. Momentum is much better. A longbow should be able to shoot a 10gr./lb. arrow at 110 fps + the poundage of the bow. If the bow is a self bow, this rule does not apply. There is no way I would use that bow for anything larger than a rabbit. I'm shooting 45# at 160fps and I'm a bit worried about it. I'll keep my shots to 20 yards and under using a 2 blade broadhead. Dick

I don't put much, if any, stock in hard & fast Ke rules, but 15 foot pounds seems awefully light for whitetails.

Personally, I wouldn't do it.
