I make selfbows... when the fit takes hold of me. I made my own bows when I was a kid and didn't have any money. Now I'm retired and don't have any money. Just like being a kid again, but without the youth. [&:][8D]

Actually, the last half dozen or so I've made have been from red oak boards I got at Lowes or Home Depot. My back can't handle chopping down trees, splitting out staves and stuff but I can still have fun making and shooting my ownbows.

Here are a couple of websites where you might pick up a couple of tricks.

I also make trad. longbows, and solid stick recurves.

It is like a bug that bits you LOL, right now am working on a dozen bows, trying all kinds of woods.

right now, hickory and bamboo lamination are the best shooters as far as am corncerned.

I have one osage am working on, I have heard a lot about osage but never had one, so I'll let you know when I finish it.

I just got some european cherry and sapele and will be making a few flat bows from that.

I don't like the redoak bows as i had many that cracked on me, unless you back them when they are over #45, they just don't hold up.

I learned a lot from Ferret's bow web page, specially starightening cane arrows, etc.

good luck

Well, I'm glad that there's at least one other teen out there that likes making and shooting traditional bows. All my friends that bowhunt are into the high tech modern bows. I'm 17 and I've made some bows. Most of mine are out of oak. I have yet to do a laminated one but for now, I like not having to worry about gluing up boards and just being able to make ones using a saw, hatchet and knife.

untried, have you considered making a self bow from a board? I bet you can come up with a suitable oak board from a lumberyard up there... Plus there are some great board bow tutorials on the net that we could point you to.

Hopefully I'll be attempting my first self bow this late winter/early spring

i just finished a bow from a red oak board. I tis about 40 - 45 pounds at 27 inches. It was lots of fun and is a joy to shoot. If you want a great bowbuilding site go to

Cherry would work well if you can cut a stave with no knots in it.

or even from a nut tree.

Quote:
Find mid limb on both limbs. Draw a line from the nock to the mid limb point on both sides of that limb. Repeat on the other limb. Slowly remove wood with a draw knife (what I use) or a saw
