Red Wing Hunter set up

I drug out my pops old bow. It hasn't been shot in almost 25 years. It isa Red Wing Hunter at 58" and 53#. He had none of the stings or arrows anymore. I would like to set it back up so that he and I can start shooting it again. Especially since I would like to try sometraditional bow hunting.

The bow is in great shape with no flaws.

What arrows and string would you recommend to get this bow shooting again? Thanks Joe

The bow will take an AMO 58" B-50 string. Never use any of the fastflight type strings on that, or any other, old bow. The bow's limb tips are not built to withstand the strain of using non-stretch strings and could shear off with that type string.

Brace height for the 58" Red Wing Hunter is between 8-9". If your draw length is around 28", and your arrows won't be any more than 29" long, Easton 2016's oughta match right up. If you want to shoot cedar arrows, then I'd probably be inclined to recommend some in the 60-65 spine range.

I'm not too hot on the idea of shooting carbon arrows from vintage bows. Just seems inherently proper to shoot the types of arrows that were around when the bows were new. So I won't recommend carbon.

Thanks AuthorP. You know my Pop got this bow as a gift from my Mom back when I was growing up in Canton, Tx back in like 1974. I remeber watching him shoot it, and wishing I could back then. I have never shoot it and am looking forward to it. I do shoot a PSE Nova so I am looking forward to the change.

I just got the same bow (Red Wing Hunter at 58") recently except it's a 55 pounder. I got it back from the traditional archery shop on Friday with a new string and a dozen new cedar arrows. I had a chance to shoot it today. I really like it. Your 53lbs is a tad high to start off with if you havent shot a recurve much before. You kinda need to grow into it. It's just my opinion... I used to shoot a 70lb compound (wheels) bow with no problem. But I could only shoot about 15-20 shots today from the 55lb recurve before my arm started acheing and it was effecting my shot.
