Mike,

We planned on doing some scouting, but getting the grass cut, limbs cut off of the apple trees and the new roof installed on the cabin took longer than we anticipated. We didn't make it to the woods, although we did drive out Turkeybone Road through the State Forest and by some of the farms beond it and we did see 33 deer Friday evening between 6:3- and 7:15. That is not too bad when you consider all of the leaves are still on and we could only
see a fourth to a third of the area we normally eyeball the first
evening we get to the camp.

The herd is definitely healthy in Randolph County. We saw some very
large bodied does, and several larger bodied bucks. One had a very
strange looking rack that looked like two main beams on either side with no points. Another was an 8 to 10 point still in velvet!!

The Ranger stopped by the camp Friday afternoon and talked with us for a spell. He said some acorns hit and some cherry. He didn't mention beech at all. I'm gonna have to go out one of the ridges we hunt and check it out because beech is just about all it has on it and it always has deer transiting almost all day long.

I'm still sore from last weekend. I don't know what I'm going to do
when I spend a whole week walking the mountains. I guess I'll walk
softly and carry a light stick (and string)!! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Mike,

I think the difference is they do it 365 days a year, rather than a week or so like we do! They also don't get quite as old as we are! <img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Running? Who's running? The only thing running when I'm in the mountains is my nose!! I couldn't beat a snail up the side of the mountains anymore!

Of course, there is one advantage to that. It makes for good stalking and hunting!
