Default Final sight in report

I still have about 6 weeks till my elk hunt but work is getting so busy that I thought I would take advantage of an invite to go the the range the other day and sight in my MLer. The load I'm using this year is a 300 Shockwave over 110gr of 777 2F. This load is averaging about 1850fps. I have it sighted in 1" high at 100 yards. Withmy scopes ballistic reticle and this sight in I am point and shoot to about 150 yards, first aim point down is good for 200 yards, next is 250 and the next is 300. I don't plan on shooting that far but it retains 1000+fpe until about 325 yards at this alltitude. Shots 1 and 2 of my 3 shotconfirmation group were touching, shot 3 I pulled but still managed a 1.25" group. I think that will do.

The guy I went to the range with was sighting in his new CVA Electra. His load was 150gr of 777 pellets and a 270 Platinum Powerbelt. His load averaged just under 2100fps and shot about 1" at 100 yards. He also tried 100gr of pellets and it shot almost exactly 3" low to the 150 load and about 1800fps. Unfortunately for me he finished shooting about the same time I did and had put his gun up before I realizedI hadn't got to shoot it. He said maybe next time since we both had to get going. I was impressed with the guns accuracy but it's not any more accurate than mine and it took him about as long to load and shoot as it did me. I didn't see any huge advantage in the system, just different in a couple of steps. I still want to shoot it just to say I have.

Wow a 1" group @ 100 yards with 150 grains of powder is excellent. I guess those Bergara barrels are good shooters it sounds like.

It did shoot good but the guy is also a very good shot with a good bit of shooting experience. My load would have shot under an inch if I hadn't pulled it. The first 2 shots were under .5".

Ialso gota chance to shoot 1 shot with some APP 3F. I shot the same load and bullet I sighted in with, 110gr APP and 300gr SW, it only achieved about 1400fps. I wasn't impressed.

WOW!! that is a shock that 110 grains of 3f APP only got that kind of a reading. I alway thought it was more powerful then that. I was shooting some 2f today and was really pleased with the powder for a change.

Cayugad, I don't know what the difference is between "regular" APP and APP's Jim Shockey's Gold, but when I did the "Great Plains Experiment" shooting 90 grains volume of JSG, Pyrodex, and T-7 under a 385 Great Plains bullets the JSG had the lowest velocity by far.

Five-shot average velocities were:

T-7 =1583 fps
Pyrodex =1144 fps
JSG = 1018 fps

Thats what I saw Semisane. I was being generous when I said about 1400, I didn't write it down but it was closer to 1370 or 1380, very close to the 500fps difference you saw.

Does anyone know where this powder gives reasonable/comparable velocities to other powders? Maybe with heavier bullets or lighter bullets? I would like to do more testing but so far I'm not impressed with the velocity.

Why worry about FPS? All i look for is a bullet that shoots accurate groups and will hold them. FPS i'll leave for the centerfire guys

Have you tried any 410 great plains? Those too are awesome shooting conicals.

I haven't tried the 410's but I have tried the 385's and did not get as good of results as with the 460 NE's and BS's. I do like shooting those big conicals but I'm out of them right now so I'm going with the 300 SW's.

I'm not that worried about the fps as long as it's similar to what I get from other powders. The problem I have with a powder that costs as much as 777 yet needs 30 to 40% more powder to achieve similar performance is it ends up costing 30 to 40 % more to shoot. I get good to very good accuracy from several powders so why pay more for less.

Murph, whichWhite were you shooting and which Shockwave variation? You probably said already but I'm sleepy.

How did they load for you - easy, torture, something in between?

The ones with the yellow sabo, I think they call them easy glide. I was thinking of trying the new SST version with the easy load sabot, they have a box of 25 at Sportsmans Warehouse for about $13.
