Default Got my first bow, now what?

I went to the dealer today to buy my first bow, I was planning on buying a bowtech alliegence but the associate talked me into buying the defender VFT; which was $100 cheaper. I will be using my new bow for primary only elk hunting. My question is what asseccories should i get, the bow comes bare. I had to order it from the factory cause my DL is only 26.5 and i got the 70# wieght. I was thinking about a whisker bisquit rest, some sims dampeners, string loop, peep sight, maybe some string leeches, but im not to sure about the rest. or what would be the best elk arrows for this setup. price isn't really a problem but i don't want to go overboard either. Thanks

Well since this is your first bow you need everything. This can be cheap or expensive. I went cheap at first and was disappointed. Get a good rest and site. You can pick up a dozen of the Gold Tip arrows, which are really good arrows. You can get a whisker buiscut, drop away, or a prong rest. I personally like drop aways because they look cool! You don't really need an expensive site. You can get a good one for about $30.

You made a great choice on your bow.

Well now you have gone and done it! Its a disease trust me. You bought a great bow so I would recommend you take your time and research the accessories and you wil save money in the end.
-I have a wisker bisquit, very easy to use but hard on fletching, look at the APA twister Safari also.
-Lots of great sights, look at ones with 2ft of fiber optic per pin.
-Get good arrows they don't cost that much more than low end stuff.
-Get an STS then you won't need speeed robbing string leeches
-Get a removable quiver.

I was hoping to get a fast speed and still have a bunch of KE but im not sure what is a good arrow wieght for this setup yet. I really liked the smooth draw on this bow at the dealer though. thanks for the info so far.
I really cant wait to get my hands on it

It will come with the factory hush kit so you won't need the sims or the string leaches. I also have the Defender, and you won't be dissapointed. I am shooting 7595 Gold Tips with 125 grain points, they fly well, and I am happy with the speed, and KE they will have at 27" long and 420 grains total weight.
Spend the money on a good rest with adjustability, and a bright sight. The stabilizer just has to balance the bow, as there is very little hand shock with it, I have found mine is shooting better with a longer heavier one than the 4" doinker I had on it originally. The quiver will need to be small, as it takes very little side weight to cause this short ATA bow to cant, I switched from the 8 arrow 2 piece to the 4 arrow 2 peice for this reason.
For $40, the STS sounds like it is worth the money, and I think I will be trying one shortly.

Congrats, and enjoy, it spits arrows out nicely and I think packing it through the woods all day for Elk will be nice with its low mass weight.

The accessories you mentioned should do a good job. The wisker biscuit is a great hunting rest. You'll love it if you get your arrows properly fletched and your bow properly tuned. Make sure your arrows are spined stiff enough.

If your draw length was determined at 26.5 without a loop, then you may want to reconsider that. It will probably cause your anchor to be further back, which could negatively affect your accuracy. I would also consider a good heavy arrow to get maximum penetration on these large animals. Speed isn't much of a concern if you know the distance.

There are tons of great sights, and for hunting you don't need anything fancy. My only concern is that the pin(s) is bright enough in very low light. Impact makes some very inexpensive sights that have some of the brightest pins available.

Good luck,

My lenght was measured at the bow shop with a loop on so i think ill be fine on that. what do yall think about a belt style quiver instead of one attached directly to the bow? Im not sure what a STS is either or which company makes them. Thanks

Gotta disagree here. Dont skimp on a sight. Especially if your going to be spotting and stalking and hunting from the ground for elk. Get an all metal sight, and it will hold up much better. You dont want to discover your pins are broken and the sight housing is all bent out of shape when ur drawing back on your first elk with a bow!

it wouldn't be my first elk but it would be my first bow kill. what do you suggest as a good site? How much do you think i will be spending on all my asseccories, roughly? I was thinking around $250 not including arrows
