Default whats the deal with fluted arrows?

I happened to be looking through cabelas archery 2002 and noticed an arrows I havent seen before the x-caliber fluted arrows that claim to be quit better then the standard. Has anyone used or had any input on this type, and if so what was your set up?

I've never used them, but I do remember when they came out, around 88 or 89. They've been around for a pretty long time. The flutes stiffen the arrow so you can use a lighter arrow for more speed. Folks that normally used something like a 2219 could drop down to a 2213 Excalibur. I do know they really do some nifty things when they get robin hooded.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

What I don't like about them is you're limited to very little offset with your fletching. If you use a prong rest, you have to get the prongs set 'just so'. It's easy to wind up with one prong riding in a flute on one side and the other prong riding the ridge on the other. I've seen some wild arrow flight off into nevernever land. They're better matched with a flipper rest, IMO.

I don't have any experience with these arrows, nor do I know anyone personally that has used them. But I do know that they have been around for several years, they aren't new. If they were brand new then I would imagine a lot of guys trying them to see if they live up to their claim, but since they are several years old and not many people have even heard of them should tell you something. You know how hunters are, if something is new and gets good reviews then the majority run to the sporting goods store to buy it, especially bowhunters.

Open your catalog agoin and look at the fine print. The fluted arrow is a IBO with 350gr the unfluted arrown is AMO with 540grs. They must shoot flatter but reading the small print helped decide what to get certainly not the Excaliburs.
