on the rare occasion that I do hunt from a tree stand its usually no less no less than 20feet up and I have never gone higher than 30feet up. I don't see a need. but IMO I think the best height is wherever you will get the most cover from the tree, like you could go 20-30feet up and have no cover and stick out like a sore thumb where if you have nice cover at 10- 15 feet then I would stop there. IMO anyway, everyones different you have to be comfortable at the height you choose. if your are iffy at 20-30feet than go lower you will not enjoy your hunt if you can't even look down without soiling yourself

I agree with snowman. Whatever hides you well and you are comfortable with. I have stands that are 20-25 ft and some only 10-12 ft off ground. I depends on the tree, cover, terrain, where I think the deer will most likely be coming from, safety, etc. Lots of variables.

Where I normally hunt the deer are extra spooky and I always see more if I hunt higher. BIG problem is the shot angle goes to crud for a double lunger if the deer are close to your tree.
In time I figured out 23' was juuust right for me.
As long as there is canopy cover that is.

I went hunting to different part of my state twice this year where hunting off the ground was the way to go- no leaves on anything above 6'. Deer didn't seem to mind, but they weren't near as spooky either.

All things being equal 18'-22' is the optimum height. Unfortunately,
this isn't always the case. Factors to consider, as mentioned, cover provided, where do you expect the deer to come from, time of year
( you will need to hunt higher during late season after 'leaf drop'),
and where are your shooting lanes/possible shots.

I rarely hunt below 14'-15' or above 23'-24'. On the low-end odds are you'll get busted by either movement or getting winded, on the high-end the shot angle gets much too steep.

Don't forget "background cover" in the placement of your stand height. In my early days
I had several great bucks 'bust' me while trying to get to full draw because I was 'skylined'
from no background cover.

Now, if there's insufficient cover I duct tape artificial limbs/leaves to my stand and the
limbs around my stand. It really helps with blocking out your outline.

Here is a "before & after" pic. The 1st is from this spring when I prepped this tree (without the artificial limbs). This is a honey locust, which drop their leaves early.

Here is a pic from this fall, also the tree I took my buck from.

Good Luck

you just cant beat huntin from the ground being eye to eye to a deer but its hard to do in some places i go as high as i need some times its only 10 feet other times its 30 feet finding a good tree is probably the hardest part if yah have to hunt low in the tree put your stand on the back side of the tree with a little luck you can fill the freezer

I try to stay around 15 feet. If I have to set up in an area with little cover I may go up a little higher to maybe 20.

It all depends on the cover I am hunting. If it is thick I usually hunt around 17 feet to be able to see down into the cover. As the cover thins out I go up to about 20-25. I also like to mix and match different camo patterns to remain as concealed as possible. Just make the decision on you height according to the type of cover your in and the wind direction. Hope this helps you, and aim for the boiler room. Bhunter32.

I always try to get up around 20-25. Its the hight that i practice from for one[&:]. But more than that? It help`s to be high enuff to get out of a deer line of vison and also helps on scent control.(IMO) It all depends on how and where you hunt?
