I have 3 blade muzzys and sort of did it on accident, but they fly quite true. I can remember that they would "plane" a bit in years past. Not with them lined up though. Is this common or am I just lucky???

Hey doughboy -- you're right around the corner! I'm in Greene, NY!
Anyway, I've tried lining up the vanes and not lining up the vanes. Didn't seem to matter too much. Plus, I shoot offset vanes, so it really doesn't matter in my case...

Nuthin fancy, but hey... it works!
I agree that aligning the blades with the fletching is not nessessiary however I shoot with the index fletch up and the end of my arrow is all the way up over the shelf so for maximum shelf clearance I like to align the blades with the fletching.

my one blade will hit my riser if it isn't fairly close to lined up anyway. i shoot cock vane up, if the "inside" blade is perpendicular it touches (slightly). so, i guess, it's almost a neccessity.

I shoot only Muzzy 130 4blade and the trick is real simple. Make the broadhead look like an X not a t. I shoot this with straight 3 fletch, cock vane out, 5" vanes, 2314 XX75 26", on a 30" draw, XI Force One or my Parker Hunter Mag set at 70lbs. I was told this wouldn't work, but don't tell all the animals I have killed. When my bow is tuned, and I put alot of work into that, I can shoot 6" groups at 80yds with broadheads. Give it a try.

I've never figured out how to align a 4 blade head with a 3-fletch arrow.
I really get screwed up when I try aligning them with my helical fletch. Do I align with the front, middle or back of the fletch? Besides, I use two blade broadheads and I'm leary about trying a two fletch arrow.
I don't necessarily think it is necessary, but I do line up the broadheads so they come off the bow exactly the same. I guess I align them more to the nock then the fletchings.
