Default Bowstrings.

How often does a bowstring need to be replaced? If I need to replace it what should it be replaced with and is there any difference between one string or another as far as performance is concerned? I have had the same bow string on my bow since I starting bowhunting 8 years ago. It seems to be in good shape but my pro shop guy says that I should replace it. Is this necessary or am I being sold on something I don't need? Thanks for the help.

I'd replace it if I were you. I usually replace mine every year. I don't know what type of bow you have so I can't make any suggestions to the kind of string you should buy. I would take the advice of your Pro Shop. And no I don't think that he is trying to sell you something that you don't need.

I change my string and cable every year. I make my own so it is easier and cheaper for me to do it. Most people seem to change the string every year or two and the cable(s) every couple years. Depends on the care it gets, how much usage, etc. For the price I feel it's cheap insurance to change it more often. Material for your bowstring depends on what you want. Check www.bcyfibers.com and it should help a little. I use 450 Plus (even though fastflight came on my bow) and haven't noticed any problems. For me 450 Plus is the way to go, others may have different opinions. If you have 8 years on your string then IMO you should replace it.

I agree you should replace it, and with a bow that old I'd suggest 8125. It does creep a little and is more like the fastflight that your bow probably had as original. However you need to check amd make sure the bow is designed for fastflight, some bows aren't and need strings made with B50 or dacron. Your pro shop should be able to fix you up.

I replace my strings and cables every year. I think 8 years is way to long, and one day you may find your bow coming apart.

I replace my string and cables every year. A word of caution is needed here. If you replace your string be careful, some of the older bows with the tear drop attachments for the string were not made for the newer fastflight strings, To put a FF string on a bow made for a Dacron string could cause the bow to blow up. Be sure and check with the bow manufacturer to see what kind of string your bow is capable of using. Be safe.

Thanks Guys! I dropped it off at the shop on satruday and it will be ready this week. The only reason I questioned it was because of the strings appearance. It looked like it was in great shape. I shoot approx. 100+ arrows a week and have done so since I got my Bow. It is a Darton Excel in case you are wondering. It is set up at 30" draw length draw weight 60#. I have recently decided on a new bow to use as a primary and keep the Darton as a back-up. The CyberTEC will be my new baby. Thanks again for the help. I know my pro shop guys wouldn't rip me off but I just had to ask.

O.K I didn't want to come out and say it, but I go years betweens string changes (back in the good old days when I could shoot all I wanted - in the last few years my bows haven't gotten any mileage on them but I am not counting that. Sometimes I think Winner's Choice has part ownership in this site, and I don't like to come out and say stuff like "Hey, run your string for years". Last night I was watching Burley Hall's tape on winning 3D. He mentioned that when he instals servings using his process, he sometimes gets as much as a year's shooting from them. Last time I checked it was hell changing strings under the serving... The implication was that he was going to re-serve at that point, not chuck the string, before you know it another year has gone by. This was kind of back in the days ('95) when a lot of 3D shooters were shooting 80#, and making 310+. Burley used to run a pro shop, and so whatever comp gear he may have got from HCA, I think he still knew what a regular person could expect.
