I'm just starting to bow hunt and I just got a Bear Buckmaster BTR and I can't use it,I can hardly draw it back even once on the lowest setting of 55 lbs,And the lowest draw length of 28",
I'm 5'3,31 years old and this is the first time I've ever tried bow hunting,What would be a good bow for me to start out with,As for draw length and draw weight?
All I can suggest is for you to get to a pro shop and make sure the bow is in good working order. Also get your draw length measured to make sure that the bow fits you... since you are a tad bit on the short side... the draw might be too long. Get measured up.. and if the bow doesn't fit your correctly... then get rid of it and get on that does.
You need to go to a proshop and have him measure you for your draw length. At 5'3 your probably about a 24 1/2 to 25. I would than start with a bow with a 40 to 50 pound draw weight and see how that feels to you. Once you get your draw length right you may find out you can draw a little more since your not over drawing the bow to reach the wall.
At 31 years old I imagine that you are strong enough to pull back 50-55 lbs. Like the others have stated, the draw on the bow is probably 3" too long, preventing you from reaching the "wall". Go to a reputable pro-shop and get your draw length measured, and ask to draw back a couple of different bows with your draw length. Once you reach the wall, you will be a lot more comfortable, and confident.

[&:] I am not quite 5 ft. and have seen a new bow by Mathews (Mustang) that has a very short draw length. At 5'3" your draw is probably pretty short as well.... you know...short legs, short arms.....

I would suggest going to a pro shop and checking out bows like the bowtech rascal,browning micro midas,mathews genesis,maybe not so much hunting bows but come in draw lengths up to 25 inch and draw weights of 20 to 40 lbs,maybe 50 on a few other models.
This might be a very good option at your draw length and comfortable poundage.Practice with this and get your form right,practice a little more and next year buy the bow that fits and crank the poundage up a few notches,then you will be ready for hunting.
Another option would be the mustang that deerhuntress mentioned,all the bow you need,get it set up for you and you will be good to go----Have fun and good luck
Many of the top line BowTechs go down to 25 inch draw, Pro 40 Freedom down to 27 inches, Pro 40 and Patriot Dually down to 26 inches, BlackKnight down to 25 inches, Pro 40 Wheely down to 23 inches, Tom Cat down to 27 inches, Rascal down to 19 inches, BlackHawk2 and LadyHawk down to 20 inches and all the rest down to 25 inch draw length.
The Liberty and Justice are super easy to draw!!
Thanks for the help ladies and gents,My peak draw length is 25.5 inches,50 TO 55 Pounds is easy,Hell I could even draw 55 pounds at 28,But it hurt like crazy.
Now does anyone know where I could find a good bow with a 25.5 draw length and a 55 pound draw weight for no more than $400.00?
I'm on disability so I can't afford to pay $600.00 $800.00 and $900.00 for a bow,I wish I could,I would love to have a Mathews,But I just don't have it in the budget..Any suggestions?
