Default Carbon Arrow for Hunting?

I know this has probably been beaten to death but I am blind from searching through posts and if I do a search for "carbons" it comes back with TOO MANY hits.

I am interested in looking into new carbon arrows for hunting. I shoot at around 65 lbs and have a 30 1/2" draw length. I currently use the Beman Carbon Hunter 380-16 and I am not sure I like the "outserts" needed for the tips and nock assembly. I am also considering going to a slightly larger diameter.

Any recommendations?

Thank you.

Your best bet is to visit a pro shop in your area. There are several companies that make larger diameter carbon arrows that use inserts instead of outserts. The main problem is finding ones that are straight enough to use. The last time I purchased carbon arrows, I bought Gold Tip. Out of the dozen, only 5 were what I'd call straight. The other 7 were so bad, they couldn't even be used for practice. Before you buy, spin check each arrow for straightness. A decent pro shop will allow you to do this. If you buy them mailorder, well, you're stuck with what you get.

Now this might sound silly but if your only going to use them for hunting why do you want a larger diameter arrow?

The consensus these days is that the smaller the diameter the better penetration you will get.

I am using the new Easton Axis and so far I am very impressed with them.

Ausie,

I'm not "locked" in to the larger diameter, I just want an arrow that "feels" right and feels solid. I have a suspicion that if I shoot carbons with inserts instead of "outserts" I will feel better about them. The outserts just dont seem right to me. They look weird and in my mind give the appearance of too much going on. I.E.-another thing that can be out of whack.

Make sense?

You might like the ST Axis arrows with their smaller diameter and hidden inserts.

I set up some Axis arrows this past weekend for a buddy and I was very impressed with the design.....time wil tell if first impressions last, but I don't see there being a problem. Beman or Easton ICS carbons are always a safe bet.

[quote]Out of the dozen, only 5 were what I'd call straight I fell your pain, I bought 12 beman ics hunters and only 6 were good enough to hunt with, the other half was terrible. I have been hearing very good things about the axis, but pers have never shot them. Iam ready to go back to my super slams

Unlike Danny45, I've had pretty good luck with my GoldTips, I've had a few that were a little warped but the vast majority were straight. However, I think I have been pretty lucky judging by a few of the posts I've seen.

You might also look at the Beman ICS Hunter's, and I don't know how much you want to spend but the Beman Matrix is a superb shaft in my opinion and I have never heard of anyone had a problem with them - but they are rather expensive.
