Default KE

If I shoot at 60 lbs with a 30" draw length, the IBO speed is 303. I am not sure of mine. what is my KE or ft/lbs? is it enough to shoot mechanicals? I use use 2117 easton gamegetters (aluminum) arrows.

trestand is right, we need more info. You need to know your arrow weight, and actual arrow speed. I doubt you' re shooting anywhere near the IBO speed with those arrows and that draw weight. I' d say, depending on arrow length, you' re a over 500 grains in total arrow weight. There are only four other easton shafts that weigh more per inch than the 2117. Even a 28" bare shaft weighs 336 1/2 grains before you add fletching, nock, insert, and point.

The formula for figuring kinetic energy is:

speed x speed x arrow weight, divided by 450,240

But, knowing that 2117 arrows are fairly stout, and knowing you shoot at 60 lbs I' d say you have plenty of KE for shooting mechanicals at whitetails.

The following is from the Gold Tip site that trestand mentioned.
Forty (40) foot pounds KE will allow a total pass through on a whitetail deer.
Fifty (50) foot pounds of kinetic energy are suggested for hunting elk.

Good luck to ya!

Frankly, I don' t see that you have anything whatsoever to gain by shooting mechanicals. You aren' t going to be blazing arrows too fast to control fixed blade heads. You don' t have to use mechanicals because of crappy arrow quality like people do with carbon. At 60 pounds draw, you certainly don' t have the energy to push one of the really wide cutting mechanicals through a deer, and you' ll need something nearly identical in cutting diameter to most fixed heads. Nothing to gain.

But if you insist on doing so, then stick with something like the Rocket Steelhead 125 or the Rocky Mountain Snyper.

You need some real numbers. Actual chronograph speed, and actual arrow weight in grains. You really don' t want to guess! If you want a guess I' d say stick with fixed! ( this comes from a mechanical fan)

Good Luck!

With 60# and a 30" draw, on what sounds like a relatively hard cam bow...you should have more than enough to run mechs.

Good mechs can often out penetrate many fixed heads.

Art' s suggestion on Rocket 125' s is excellent advice. I would also look at the NAP Shockwave. OR WASP heads.

Well thanks for the help. I will have to find a pro shop in the area and get those things figured out for me. I appreciate the help and suggestions though. The mechs I am using/would like to use are Rocket steelheads 125 by the way.

Thanks again.
