Default Fletching size

Probably a stupid question, but for years I have been using 4" fletching on my arrows. Is there a optimum size fletch? I realize that the longer the fletch the more wind resistance it will encounter, not to mention the extra weight. But is there a point that the fletch can be too small. For example, I shoot 28" XX78 2315 with 4" feather fletch and 100 gr. tips. Will 2" Fletching still stabilize the arrow? 3"? I realize that I could just buy different sizes and try it, but I'm trying to avoid buying lots of stuff that I might never use again, LOL.

At the risk of sounding like a butt here.... the minimum size for your arrow is the one that won't stabilize it anymore. Dee de dee....

To actually answer the question though, with field points and a correctly spined arrow, it doesn't take much at all to control the shaft. 1" will work fine... 1.5" even. Now, shoot fixed blade heads and that is where you'll run into some issues.

Bohning (who makes the Blazer vane) recommends nothing less their 2" blazers for broadheads. I don't know if that includes fixed and mechs or just fixed heads. It comes down to a balance... if you are going to go short, then you are going to want either a slightly taller vane, or you are going to want to add more offset or helical to allow you some control. Most 2" vanes will say right on the package if they are designed with hunting in mind or targets in mind.

Now since you are shooting feathers, you might want to consider those 2" or 3" Razr feathers. I think meanv2 is shooting them. They are essentially just a blazer vane... only they are a real feather rather than a plastic vane. Nothing works better than real feathers.

I completely agree with everything SC said... I use 2.3" duravanes on my 3d arrows and have recently put feathers on my target arrows, but im still going to use a higher profile 2+" vane for hunting with fixed blade heads. Probably goin to make somefeathers of my own and see how they work

agreed. imo the only thing you really need vanes for is shooting fixed blade broadheads. in fact, one of my favorite methods of tuning is to bare shaft tune, or shoot vaned and unvaned arrows and tuned til they have pretty much the same poi. shooting broadheads without vanes can be very dangerous, however.

Thanks for the responses. I might just pick up a pack of 3" fletch and see if they will stabilize my BH's. If not, I'll stick with the 4".

Thanks
