Rests and Forgiveness

It's that time of year for me to tinker with something new. I was thinking of looking at some arrow rest options, just to see what else may be out there. I perfectly happy with my APA Twister Safari rest, but I want to play with something new for a while over the winter.

I was looking at many other rests and noticed something. Many of these rests, when at full draw contact the arrow behind the riser shelf. The way my APA is setup, when it rotates, the contact point between the shaft and the rest is inline with the throat of the grip. This got me thinking. I believe the APA would be more forgiving to torque issues because it is inline with the rotation point of the bow handle. In contrast, with the rest to arrow contact point being behind the grip throat, it will be more sensitive to grip torque.

What are your thoughts on this?

No doubt about it. A rest that sits behind the riser is similar to shooting with an overdraw, which we all knew could detract from a bow's accuracy when slight human errors were made.

I disagree. I was shooting the APA Ultimate Twister Safari on my 82nd until about a month ago. It is a fine product, but no more accurate that my Vapor Trail Limb Driver, which I am using right now. I am actuallt more accurate with the Vapor Trail than the APA and the Vapor Trail mounts behind the riser.

I would like to caution you to check the side to side movement of the sight. I found that the screws are easily rattled and the rest will be able to move side to side about 1/8". Not good, but if you take the time to check this before you shoot it is not a big deal. To see if it is happening to you, grab the part of the rest that holds the arrow and try to move it side to side. If it does, then you need to tune and tighten the screws down. Otherwise you are just fine.

In theory,yes,when your rest is behind the pivot point,it is less forgiving BUT,there are other factors to forgiveness as well.A rest that is soft as opposed to stiff will be more forgiving and the longer a rest stays in contact with the shaft,the more forgiving as well.This provides guidance and stability.

The limb driver is one of the best on the market for this right now as far as hunting rest go but I will give the whammy a slight edge over it.The new mathews rest should also be very good if it works as well as I think it will BUT,I have not held one or even seen one up close to know for sure.

I"m not sure what rest I'm going to play with yet. I want a rest that has a good bit of containment. This is why the APA has been so good to me.

Blackstick, I know what you're talking about with side to side play with this rest. However, I tightened mine up right after I bought it and have not had any issues since. That was almost 3 years ago.

I may wait until the ATA showto see what new rests are out there before making any decisions.

Just wanted to make sure. 1/8" at the rest is 2" at 20 yards.
