Default optical brighteners in clothing?

Is there any truth to deer seeing the optical brighteners in clothing? I work with black lights at work, and clothing manufactures do use optical brighteners in there fabric. I just find it hard to believe that the deer see them.

its considered something to the effect of the UV spectrum and deer can see into that spectrum much better then us.. there eye site is developed so.. apprently.. they are saposed to sp UV brighteners as a blue glowing tinge....

is it true? who knows.. although..i was spotted in the tree by a few does inmy new scentblocker ghillie suit i was wearing last year.. i was downwind so i know they didnt scent me.. but they sure saw me up there.. odd feeling making eye contact with an animal your about to draw down on.

Wow only one response! I figure there are two people, those who are embarrassed to admit that they use these products that supposable eliminate the glow, and those who think there crap. [:-]

its just a waste of money to me... just like the wipes and etc. I do use the scent lok suit but I put that right on over my blue jeans and tee shirt, then just spray down with scent a away. If deer see you, its normally because you dont have good cover and stand out in the skyline. Ive had deer right under my stand(some only 10ft stands also) and never had trouble with them seeing me.

Maybe it helps, but Ive never had issues with them seeing me and I dont use the stuff. I'd personally spend money on something else for your bow. Just make sure you arent in the open up a tree and hunt the wind. 90% of the time thats all that matters.

Don't read to much into it. Kind of been done here before.

I'm always skepticle of topics that keep coming up like this one is. Saw an article on it today, of course the guy was selling something, a little black ligtht flashlite. And then there was soap mentioned.

The guy did popo the notion that camo manufactures don't use uv brighteners any more since they returned to having their garments made out of country. He did mention that some and olny those that claim they don't use them can be trusted.

HOGWASH!!!! I use ALL: Scent Free Detergent on ALL of my clothes, hunting and regular, and it has UV brighteners in it, and I've NEVER had any issues that weren't self-inflicted. I stood next to trees last fall, and had deer walk within 10yds of me MANY times, and at 6' and 240#, it'd be pretty damned hard to not see me if I was "GLOWING" in blue. I had a 110'ish" 9 pt buck 6 yds from me when I finally went "BOO!!!!" at him and scared him off because he was closer than I cared for him to be.

I'm not sold on that crap!!!! If you're really concerned, PUREX makes a SCENT-FREE detergent that DOES NOT have UV brighteners, and I use it as well when I've found it on clearance, but I've never noticed any difference in deers' responses to me regardless of which I've washed my stuff in, they still are usually OBLIVIOUS!!!

First time post for me and first time deer hunting in a long time. Was wondering why everyone was seeing and getting deer but. Started searching the forum and low and behold it was my scent and the fact they could see my clothing. Figured out the scent part, but was curious about the UV optical brighteners. I saw how expensive the hunting specific unscented laundry detergents were and wondered if regular unscented detergents would work. Looked on the Tide\P&G website, clicked on Contact tide and searched on UV brighteners. It returned a FAQ answer that stated there are several products they sell that are unscented and contain no optical brighteners. web address and FAQ response below.

http://www.tide.com/en_US/contactus.jsp

Contain optical brighteners?
Question
Do you make any laundry detergents that don't contain optical brighteners?
Answer
Optical brighteners are commonly used in laundry detergents to enhance fabric appearance and maintain whiteness or brightness. We understand there may be situations in which a detergent without these brightening agents is needed. The following detergents do NOT contain optical brighteners:

Bold Powder
Cheer Original Liquid
Cheer with Bounce Fresh Linen Scent Liquid
Cheer Free & Gentle Liquid (but not HE)
Cheer Dark Liquid
Cheer Powder (all versions)
Tide Free Liquid (except Tide HE Free)

Hope this helps!

I agree with OHbowhntr on this one. Regular scentless detergent is fine.
