I just started fletching my own arrows last year. The space between my fletching and end of arrow(not end of nock) is 7/16''! I made them this close because of hearing that the closer to the back of the arrow the more stable it is, but is this true?
I see a lot of peoples arrows and the fletch has got to be over a good 1/2''-3/4'' away? Am I gaining anyhting or losing anything from fletching the way I do? I do not notice any bad arrow flight or bad shots?
Also if you will tell me what you fletch yours at as well! Thanks!!
That's the way I fletch mine, and have no problems. In my opinion, as long as you use a release you should be ok. The only reason to fletch farther from the arrow end is if you shoot with fingers.

I'm not sure of the exact measurement I fletch arrows, but you are fine. I've some people fletch their vanes 1.5" forward or more. I'd say further back is better.
The difference in arrow flight between and arrow with fletching 1", 3/4" and 1/2" from the end of the shaft is neglagable. Once your bow is tuned and you ensure you drop away is getting out of the way fast enough and that the fletching is not rubbing the side of your face at full draw, the arrows should all fly identically......within the capabilities of a human shooter.
One thing to watch for is making sure the fletching isn't against your face at full draw. That was how I determined where to put mine, just far enough forward to clear my face. They actually measure 3/4". Everybody's face and anchor is different. So it works for you that's all that counts.
So basically what I get from you guys is it doesnt matter!?!? I am guessing from your all of your responses that it doesnt much matter as long as the fletching is not in contact of my face?
I goofed around with a few things also. If I can get this pic to load, I will show you. What I found is that distance from the back really did not make a difference in how I shot, even if each vane was more than an inch different.

Having fletching on your face and then let the sting go is not any fun! I shot a fletching off today and goofing off I shot the two fletch arrow also. It was touching one of the three flecth arrows (which was what created the two fletch arrow in the first place!). I wouldn't try that with a broadhead, but the point is, the distance of the fletching from the back of the arrow is not a critical issue. Having the fletching raise a welt on your face, on the other hand, is!
