RE: T-handle release. any suggestions?
What you are paying for on a +$100 release is the trigger. Breaks crisply with little to no travel or takeup. As far as what everyone says about which is the best, if you stick with the major brands (Carter, TruBall, Stan) you will do fine. The biggest issue is finding one that fits your hand perfectly. I have literally owned more than 15 thumb trigger hand held releases, and in every case I got rid of them based solely on how they felt in my hand, not on the action of the trigger.
In that you are really starting out, I would check out the Archery Talk classifieds and buy your release used. Shoot it a bit and determine if you like it or not. If not, buy another and sell the first one back on AT. For the most part, releases will hold their value right in and around the $100 mark. Start working through them and find the one that works for you.
Here is a short list of what I have tried, and my likes and dislikes about each release.
Carter Insatiable: Great release. It has been my "go to" hunting release for the past 4 years. The handle width is fairly wide and seems to distribute the weight of a hunting bow pretty well across my fingers. The trigger has all of the qualities I mentioned above. This one just seems to fit my hand perfectly. You would have a hard time going wrong with this one.
TruBall Trail Boss: Close to the same geometry as the Insatiable. For me the handle seemed a little narrow when drawing my hunting rig. It seemed to put more pressure on my fingers that I like. Trigger was great. I had the Talon head which works great. The only downside from a mechanical standpoint was the screws that held the head tight. Those small philips heads were nearly impossible to tighten enough without stripping the head out.
TruBall Little Boss: 3 finger version of the Trail Boss. All the same comments as the Trail Boss.
Stan Super X Quattro: I lusted over this release since they introduced it. It just looked like the best thing since sliced bread. The trigger positioning was infinitely adjustable and the feel of the trigger was great. Fit and finish was top notch. Unfortunately it simply did not "feel" quite right in my hand. I was never able to get comfortable with it and ultimately sold it.
Carter Chocolate Addiction 3 finger: This release seemed to be the one to top all others. I liked everything about the way the release operated, but the shape did not fit my hand well. You seem to need big paws to be comfortable with this release.
Hope this helps
