Default STS set up

Should the STS rest against the string when everything is at rest, or do some people leave a gap?

I have mine resting against it, with a little pressure but not enough to push against the string.

One of my buddies had a considerable gap (a quarter inch, at least I would say).

How should these be set up?

Your set up is pretty much standard. You may want to try off a little (credit card width) and see if it's better or worse. Most people I know have it setting right on the string as you are describing. Your buddy'sis way off. That much of a gap provided little benefit if any. The purpose of the STS is to stop the string oscillation and from traveling forward to reduce hand shock as well as string travel.

Another benefit is to release the arrow off the string at "as close to string rest position" as possible so that the arrow is not affected by string travel for maximum speed as well as a clean release.

Even after hitting the STS your friend's string will probably still oscillate and the arrow willnot come off the stringuntil the string hits the STS.

I agree with dave to big a gap would make sts inaffective.I would go with lightly touching string.

most shops will set at a 1/8 inch away from the string
