carbon arrows ?

I broke the old bow out of mothballs 1980 browning explorer 2 ,45 to 60 lbs bow made back in 1980
The last time I hunted with the bow was 1998 then my peak weight was 60lb :The bow has a 35% let off and back then I used easton xx75 2117 shafts with 5" feathers with off-set.I am not new to bow hunting been in the sport for more then 25 years before I did hang it up.
I now find as age is creeping up I set the bow to 50lbs and still using 2117 xx75 but been interested in maybe switching to carbon arrows.
I see they are a little different then using the chart back then I was wondering if a 400 grain arrow with be my size for my set up.
The bow is a 4 wheeler all wood laminated including limbs:I just tuned the bow with the 2117 bare shaft at 15 yards and the arrow flies straight as a dime.
any help would be appreciated on arrow selection

If the bow is still in good shape andand those 2117's are shooting good for you, I'd leave well enough alone and hunt. That old bow isn't going to fling arrows out very fast even if you make the change to carbon.I'd just stay withthe heavier aluminums and hunt.

If it aint broke, then dont try to fix it. I would stick with the original set up and roll with it until the deer start waving their white flags.

I have to agree with them. I love carbon arrows but if you got it shooting good why mess with it?

i'd leave it alone. Not sure the extra stress of the lighter arrows on a laminated, 27 year old bow would be worth the speed gain.

I'm sure. The bow would probably be in various and sundry pieces if you tried to shoot a carbon arrow. If you MUST get away from aluminum, and I know they have gotten pretty hard to find in many areas nowadays, then at go with a carbon composite arrow at least 11-12 grains per inch.

I have to agree with the others. Being that old, the limb technology wasn't what it is today. I wouldn't tell you not to shoot carbon arrows, but do your homework to find some comparable in weight to the 2117's or just maybe slightly lighter.

It's not just so simple to say "carbon or aluminum". There are carbon arrows that weigh more than aluminums of like spine and length.

Frankly, my personal opinion? If you have enough aluminums then that's what I'd shoot. Having to shoot a carbon a like weight is not going to achieve anything for you except possibly better durability. There would just not be enough speed gain to justify the cost.

And while you're at it I'd suggest a new string (Dacron or B50). I would assume, having been shooting compounds for 35 years now, that yours has steel cables. Don't worry about them, but change the string.

i agree with bg, i wouldnt use a 452x or similar string on a bow that old. I'd stick with the fast flite or dacron.

Well, I say do what you want just keep the arrow weight to a minimum of 460 grns.total. The carbons would be quieter on the draw. If it was me I'd use the aluminums first. I'm cheap like that. I'd also go with a 400 spine carbon for starters.
