Hi all....I am looking on buying new sight for my bow, and I was wondering how many pins should I get on it? I was thinking 3 pin. I would of bought one last year but I got called up to active duty before I had the chance to : ) Looking foreward to getting home for deer season. Another question, pendulumn sights...good or bad. This will only be my second year of hunting let alone archery, my good ol husband got me hooked : )

Ilike using the five pins. Then I can start at 20 yards and move up in 5 yard increments up to 40 yards. Its those 5 yard increments that help me at longer ranges to put better shots on whitetails and the like. I really have never heard of any one using a pendulum sight so I can't help you there, sorry.

I've got almost 35 years shooting compounds. 3D, filed, and hunting among other venues. Considering my experience I feel qualifies to give some advice.

Being as you are relatively new to archery I'd recommend a sight with 3 pins for now. You might buy one with 5 pins and remove two till you become proficient enough to shoot longer ranges.

These three pins can be set for such common yardages as 20-30-40 yards, or maybe 15-25-35 yards depending on your likes and dislikes. Most likely you won't need to shoot farther than this.

So what do you do with the "in between" yardages? You gap shoot, placing the target between the two appropriate pins. You do not need more than three pins for now. More pins only obscure more of the target that you want to see and gives you more of a chance to pick the wrong pin. Believe me, even us seasoned shooters pick the wrong pin once in a while. The less pins you have to confuse your brain the less mistakes you can make.

Hope this helps.

I second what BG is saying. Too many pins clutter things up and can cause you to miss , or even worse wound, a deerif you accidently choose the wrong pin when it's time to shoot a deer.

As he says, use only 3 pins. If you want to, buy a 4 or 5 and either remove the pins or slide them the whole way to the bottom if possible. Until this year (20+ yrs of shooting) I've used 3 pins, or less, almost the entire time for hunting.

Set at 10 yd increments in either choice that BG says. Even though you hope t onever shoot past 30 yds it's good to practice at greater ranges. Therefore, I'd recommend the 20-30-40 choices and get proficient at 40+.

When I first started hunting I made the mistake of using a 5 pin. Shot right over the back of a nice buck because I chose the wrong pin when it counted. After that I removed 2 pins and even 3 and it eliminated the problem.

Iagree with everything that was said earlier.I shoot a 5 pin sight at 5 yard increments, but you should start out with 3 pins, that is what i did. i recommend the Trophy Ridge Micro Matrix guide series sight, you dont have to usetools to sight the pins in and you can drop the first 2 pins out of the way so you cant see them.

The Trophy Ridge Matrix is a good sight...and I have one for sale if you are interested. Nothing wrong with it, I just want to try out some other sights. PM me if interested!
