Default bow setup for elk hunting

I am gonna go public land elk hunting next year and was wanting some suggestions for arrows, broadhead type/gr. I currently shoot Vapor 400 31" and montec 100gr. I feel as if I need to step up a little but I have never been elk hunting and would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

You need to give us a little more information with respect to your setup for an accurate acessment, however......

A 400 spine arrow shot at 31" with a 100gr head will spine pretty weak. That means one of a couple of things.

1) You are shooting a low poundage bow (40-55# range) with a relatively soft cam
2) You have a short draw length (26" or less)

If neither of these things is correct then you probably will want to change your arrow setup in general, not just for elk hunting.

As far as the actual shaft and head, both are more than up to the challenge of elk hunting. The most important thing is to get your bow set up correctly and get your arrows flying right and practice....practice....practice...

Your arrow/broadhead combe weighs in excess of 400gr. This would be plenty for good penetration on an elk. The right shot could easily be a pass through.

My first advice to anyone with any weapon, is to usethe weaponyou are the most comfortable with and confident in.

What poundage? Because in Wyoming at least, you have to have at least a 50# draw for all big game. I suspect with your 31" draw and weight of arrow that you/re shooting more than that.

One other recommendation is to make sure you have and PRACTICE 40 - 50 - EVEN 60 yard pins. They ain't gonna come to ya like a hungry pup!

Get some good calls ( cow / calf / bugle ) and practice . . . practice . . . practice. Understand when, where, and especially how to use them.
You can easliy run off a lot more elk than you ever even SEE!

I shoot a Ross 334 at 70 # draw weight and 31 1/2 draw length. The arrows are actually Vapor 4000 left off a 0 last post. I was not sure if I needed a heavier arrow or browdhead. These arrows and broadheads perform pretty well on deer but unsure on a bigger boned animal. As far as distance I feel very comfortable at 50 yards, my sight will not accomadate another 60 yard pin. This is going to be a do it yourself hunt where this will most likely be a trial and error year to learn how some of the things are done and figure out a place for the next year to start at. Any additional info would be appreciated.

Pin stacking will give you 60 if you need it. Just make sure you practice it before hand.
