Pin Yardage

I have a trophy ridgeflatliner 3 pin sight and it id setup at 10-20-30 some 1 at my archery shop told me to set it up at 20-30-40 I was wondering how that would work for about a 10 or 5 yard shot?

If you are comfortable with where you have it set leave it alone. Most modern bows will be close on point of impact out to 20 yards so many set their first pin at 20. Try shooting with your 20 yard pin at 10 yards and see if there is much of a difference. If you move the pins and practice at 40 yards it will make you a much better shooter at the closer distances. You don't have to take shots at game that far but in the long run it will improve you shooting.

Most of today's bows shoot fairly flat out to about 20 yards. I just went into the shop and shot it at 10 yards and got it set up and mine shoots great at 20 yards. Some bows, like mine, can even shoot flat up to 30 yards. So, just set it up to 10 yards and see how it flies at 20 yards and 30.

Andrew, put up a target with a piece of masking tape running from the top to the bottom of your target. Make a mark on the top of the tape to shoot at... take your 10 yard pin and shoot it at ten yards, back up five yards at a time and see how much drop you have between yards... You might be surprised.
I have an extremely fast bow and there is hardly any drop between 10- 30 yards.
Then you will know where to set your pins... There are too many know it all's out there especially in pro shops.

I set a 20, 30 and 40. Not necessarily to shoot out to 40 yards, but you have a good 35 yard pin splitting the 30 and 40. A 10 yard pin is not necessary.

Why limit him,,, Auey-guy and I frequently shoot 70 yards. Why tell someone how far he can or should shoot. It's really boring for me to shoot always under 45 yards.

woops i miss understood u guys i used my ten yard pin at 20 ill have to try tomorrow after school. Plus im goin to my archery shop wed because my moms bf has taxidermy school and me goin to shoot is an excuse for them to talk i guess so.. I might go try nowi have a spot light motionscensor facin my target soo.....

You may be quite surprised by this, but A pin sighted in for 25 yards will be right on at 5 yards, about 1" high at 10 yards, 1 3/4" high at 20 yards and about 3" low at 30 yards. This assuming an arrow traveling at about 260fps. I've done it many times. It's just one more reason I always say that a 10 yard pin is nothing but clutter.

I have the trophy ridge matrix and have my pins setup for 15-25-35.

At 10yds I'm about a ½ inch high and about a ½ low at 20yds. From 35 to 40yds, there is about a 3 or 4 inch drop.

I use 1 pin out to 40yrds. I shoot at a 3 inch dot on the target and at 20 its hits the top of the dot and at 40 it hits the bottom of the dot. The less pins you have the better for me.

WHen it comes down to making a shot on an animal theres alot going on so I dont want to have to figure out what pin to use. My bow is fast enough to allow that so its not the same for everyone but try the less is more technique on the bow and see how that works.
